A Plug for Bill Fitzmaurice's Table Tuba

Yesterday I finished up building a Table Tuba, one of Bill Fitzmaurice's Home Theater subwoofers. It is a bit big (30" X 30" X 18"), but is smaller than the much heralded THT, and can be hidden or disguised a bit easier.

My build thread is here: http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/vi...hp?f=5&t=10510 , if you would like to see the "long version".

I am using a 240watt Dayton amp at 1/4 gain and the 8" MCM driver. This thing absolutely WHIPS my 150watt 10" Onkyo sub into submission.

If you are looking for an awesome sub that doesn't take much oomph to power, please consider the Table Tuba. I am certainly glad I did

nuhdguy, I don't have the software/hardware or experience to show my particular setup, but Bill does have some info here:
BFM Table Tuba

All I can tell you is you FEEL as much as hear the bass. Very, very low distortion.

that's exactly what I wanted to know. I like real world impressions not just response charts and graphs.
To try and put it in perspective, with the Onkyo(front firing ported sub), I had it goosed pretty well, running double bass in Audessy (sp?) located directly in front of the listening position (approx 6 ft away). Bass response was good, but lacked that "tactile feel". I was looking for that little bit extra, you know? All attempts to increase the bass level ALWAYS resulted in heavy distortion, muddy sound and such.

Well, the TT took care of all of that. It's tucked up under a train layout a good 15 ft from the listening area, and isn't breaking a sweat before things in the room start vibrating off the shelves. Even at this level, the bass is clean and solid.

One last thing. With the Onkyo, you could tell where the bass was coming from, even with your eyes closed. Now the bass seems to be EVERYWHERE!

The TT is more than enough sub for me.

Sounds like you like the sub!

I have both the plans for the TT and the THT. Originally, I was going to build a TT and use it a 'stealth' sub posing as a coffee table, but then opted to go with the THT for behind the sofa.

Post pics when you get the chance!

lmao, Im the exact opposite. People tend to exaggerate and people tend to not know the truth when it comes to bass response.

response charts and graphs are the ONLY way to know if a system is truely good or not.

Example of subjectivity and how some people do not know what a good bass setup is....Just read the owners thread for the BIC subs

NOTE: Im not saying the Tuba stuff isnt great and Im not comparing it to BIC. Im simply pointing out that "real world impressions" can be very, very misleading.

In the end you still need a VERY large box to get deep bass that we all crave during movie playback. Tuba designs are no exception.

ouch!..........

I do like graphs as well, but I'm also interested in how the numbers relate on a more visceral level (i.e. in the room perceptions by the listener). Having the numbers, the graphs AND people's listening experiences is always appreciated.

the reason why I'm more interested in his opinion of the response is because there are variables involved not seen in a graph or chart. Just because a sub looks good on paper, doesn't mean it'll sound the same in my living room. Move it around and it'll be different. The graphs i've seen for the table tuba seems to show that it drops off rather quickly, but in a room it has a lower response. That's what I was lookin for.
I have to agree about the Table tuba. Went into this with an open mind and can not be more please. Not too difficult to build, cost effective, and met with wife approval. Have a thread on my build here.

Sounds great for music and movies.
Be careful driving the Table Tuba with extreme LF content at high levels...it will bottom out the driver and distort horribly....

How do I know? I built one. It is probably one of the best bang for buck sub you can build to step up from the HTIB and 10-12" subs commercially avaliable, but below 30Hz, response falls off the cliff, and excursion rises RAPIDLY. That's why I built my THT, as playing THX trailers or newer action movies at anything above ~20dB below reference caused bottom-outs.

But for a $45 driver and 2 sheets of MDF, it's not a bad deal....I am working on a design with the TB W8-740P that should dig a little lower than Table Tuba, but will be smaller and is intended to be used in multiples to even out bass response in-room....stay tuned...
