A resolution solution, if you please?

Hey everyone, quick question. I have a Panasonic PT-60LC14 (which I love, I might add) and a Motorola DCT6200 HD Box, hooked up via DVI>HDMI. My question is this, from the box, I have the option of outputting either 1080i or 720p to the TV. Now, I know the rule of thumb is to set the output to the TV's native resolution, which I'm assuming is 1280x720, correct? However, the front of the TV also has an "HDTV 1080i" logo on the front. Well, I've tried both settings but I honestly can't tell the difference. Nevertheless, hardware wise, which setting should I use? Even if I'm not seeing a difference, which setting would make the most sense? As I mentioned before, the box is connected via DVI>HDMI.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's native res is 720p.
I've been reading the Motorola 6208 threads and it appears that most people find the 1080i selection better. There are a few that normally use 1080i and switch to 720p when viewing those channels (i.e. ABC, FOX, and ESPN). What that tells me is most displays have a better scaler than the STB. I think it's a YMMV answer and you need to test both with your display and also with the channels that use the different resolutions (i.e. CBS vs ABC).

What to me would make the most sense is what equates to the least amount of conversions. This would depend on what you mainly watch (1080i or 720p). If you mainly watch ABC than it would make sense to use 720p as there wouldn't need to be any scaling. If you mainly watch CBS then if you use 720p the STB needs to do the scaling and that may not be better then the display. If you set it to 1080i the STB will pass the signal and the display will scale it. Ideally, a native pass-through option on the STB is what would work best IMO but the Motorola box, although it appears has the capability based on the service manual, it must be disabled based on the menu options you have.

P.S. These comments assume the native resolution of the display is 720p.;)

So 720p would be better then upconverting it to 1080i? My Zenith and HD box both upconvert to 1080i and that's where I have them both set for my JVC. Would the picture improve if I had both at the 720p?

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer as it all depends on how good the scaler is in the different devices. It may be that your DVD player has a better scaler than the STB and your display. My guess is that most displays have a better scaler than what is in the STB but I guess it depends on when you purchased the TV and how much you paid for it. I would think the new upconverting players have decent scalers so it may be a wash compared to the display.

P.S. Some displays will only accept certain HD resolutions so your options may be limited.;)
kdog- The TV is the JVC 52". I've played (not techincally compared) 720p to 1080i on the STB and the DVD player and not really seen much difference so I just left it on 1080i. I was just wondering if maybe I missed something here and there and if I'd be better off sending a straight 720p to the JVC.
If you can't see a difference, then does it really matter?
Like I said, I didn't do any actual test, I just looked for 3 seconds and it looked fine so I left it at 1080i. So it does matter if at 720p certain DVDs will look better or programs broadcasted in 720p might look crisper if the 720p is sent to the JVC. I don't know, so until I do know, yes it does matter.
For now, I'll leave it at 720p as that's the TV's native resolution. It's nearly impossible to compare 1080i to 720p with the Motorola box as switching the mode requires you to completley shut off the box and go into a service-type menu.
