A silly question about lesser films with no great image.

Recently, I bought a dozen older horror films ranging to the 70's and 80's and have noticed none of them had an image or sound with anything that would be worth noting...

Some of them from major studios.

And I was wondering if (three or four years from now) they will take real advantage of HD formats.

Will any one care to pay $$$ for a new HD master? I mean... of course we all are loving to see HD titles who really take advantage of HD.

Will all HD titles be HD or we'll probably see many "same DVD editions" just put in a HD disc?

Know what I mean?

Well before HD DVD and BD were out there were already dozens of DVDs in stores stating that they were created using new HD transfers. I expect a large amount of films will be given new HD transfers as each format grows in popularity.

I suspect the latter, if they appear at all. Much of the material I care about is from 1930-1960, and I doubt if the films are in good enough condition to benefit from HD treatment. Honestly, I'm not sure my enjoyment of them would be increased if they were. For fans of "B" and lesser titles, SD DVD is probably as good as it gets, and frankly, that's good enough. I might feel differently if I had a 100" screen, but I will never have anything larger than 37" in a small viewing area.

By the way, I'm still wating for titles that have never appeared on VHS, much less DVD.

Yeah, HD can provide a lot of detail, but only if that's available in the source. If there's simply no good print, or if the title doesn't have the potential market to pay for a new remastered transfer, you've only got what you've got.

That said, the cost of a basic restoration is dropping rapidly at the same time the quality of expensive restorations is going up. Over time, HD will shift lower and lower down the long tail.

I wouldn't be surprised to see HD hobbyist restoration of out-of-copyright films in a few years.
What would be these lesser films with no great image?

Actually i was thinking about titles like

Friday the 13th part III

Demons

Black Christmas

Silent night Deadly night

The Incredible Melting Man

Films even the DVD editions were never anything to scream about.

Well those are all low budget so HD would reveal a lot of grain and other photography artifacts. You could also add such classics like Evil Dead.
I used to have VOOM on DISH and their Monster HD would show a lot of these films. They actually weren't too bad in terms of HD quality and definitely a step up from DVD. So if they just encoded these HD broadcast into BD or HD-DVD, most horror fans would be very happy.

I would think that any Friday The 13th film (but especially the first 4) would sell enough just from the horror junkies that a full restoration would be likely sometime in the future. As for the Italian films, we might eventually see some restored prints come out of Europe.

Black Christmas was recently shown in HD on either INHD or UHD ( I forget which one).

Paramount didn't consider restoring the uncut footage for the DVD editions ( even though we all wanted it ) so i doubt they would do much other than a standard decent job for any HD-DVD edition.

Demons is an Italian horror film and i think there is a great European release of that on DVD.

Black Christmas .....a real classic horror film which is better than Halloween....unfortunately Hollywoods remaking it but at least that means they might actually do some work on the original version to cash in on the remake.
