A simple suggestion

Hi everyone I would like to ask you all for a suggestion. I bought three months ago a pre owned JVC RS25 in excellent condition with the original lamp at 349hrs for only $400. I calibrate it and it looks gorgeous. Now I may get a JVC HD990 pre owned for $500 local and according to the seller basically brand new with original lamp with only 6hrs. All the original equipment except for the lack of the box. Should I try and buy it? I am in love with the RS25 but the idea that the 990 can be even better yet slightly better is very inviting! Thank you!

Sure, why not? $500 seems like a fair price for a nearly unused RS35, although that's about the most I would pay for it. You can try it out and if you feel everything is working like a charm then sell the RS25 for about $300/400.
The point is that I can ‘check’ if it works properly. It’s a local pic up paying cash
I mean I can’t check it out
is there really a big difference between those 2 projectors? The hd990 has slightly higher contrast but no iris

So the seller wants a local pick up and doesn’t allow you to see the projector working before picking it up? Not fair. Even in a less than ideal location some crucial aspects can be tested, such as convergence, focus uniformity and color issues.

I think it’s got the same 16 step iris as the OP’s model.

Exactly. It is not only turning it on but to test the important aspects you mentioned. I was lucky with my actual RS25. After calibration it deliver a reference picture quality under every parameter: grayscale, CMS, gamut.
They are basically the same machines but the HD990 is supposed to be better. I wanted find out how much and ‘where’. The owner guarantees it is in perfect condition but who knows? My dilemma is : should I sell mine which is working fine and please me well to get something uncertain paying cash with not protection in case of damaged unit
I recently bought a used RS2 and an RS35. Aside from the color differences, I can only tell them apart in very dark scenes, and even then, it’s not dramatic. And that is 2 generations apart. I can’t imagine you’d be able to see a difference between the 25 and 35. If I had a pristine 25, I would not roll the dice on an unknown 35. Even if it’s perfect, I think it’ll be like watching the same projector you had. Just another opinion for you to consider.
Actually I owned for few months a HD100 or RS2 before buying the 25 and yes I agree about differences as to the color accuracy due to the lack of a complete CMS and some better quality in dark dark scenes. I am doubtful and confused

I would insist on checking it out or no sale. One of the main things to look for is if it has the glue failure of the optical block. So look for a pink line along one edge of the projected image. If it has this, then walk away. Put up a white image and use high lamp.
I will insist with the seller asking for proof that the projector works perfectly. I am tempted to get the HD990 because curious about its focus. My RS25 can’t deliver a ‘perfect’ focus. I read about it and it seems quite common ‘issue’. I owned other projectors like RS40 48 and Sony 500es and the focus was ‘perfect’. Any thoughts about that? Thank you

In theory, the focus should always be better at the center of the lens, but as you said a good lens will give you an apparently perfect focus on all areas of the image. Normally, getting a projector with a good lens often involves a little bit of luck too, same as with convergence, but at these prices luck should have no part in the equation, especially because the HD990 was the highest of the high end models. Besides, even in cheaper brands and models, an uneven focus is reason to demand a replacement, so that’s something you should not let pass.

It seems that the JVC HD generation had a good but not perfect focus as well as a half pixel out in the matrix alignment. I read about that and I my RS25 respect this trend. Anyone can confirm that? Thank you
