A strange occurance with HD-A1

Today I decided to hook up my S-video cable to test how 480i performs w/ the HD-A1. To my surprise were two things.

1. By doing this I was able to get 480i via component for both HD-DVD as well

as standard. Normally the player will only output 480p for standard via component and only do 480p/720p/1080i for HD DVD via same output.

2. My other finding was by doing this this activates the DRC in my Sony TV

(KD-30XS955) which was the last modelmade with super fine pitch. The DRC upconverts any 480i signal to 960i nearly HD. Any how I determined that the The Sony actually does a better job with upconverting then the HD-A1.

You should be able to get to 480i via component using the "Resolution" button on your A1 remote. Mine cycles through the four options 480i/480p/720p/1080i while playing an HD DVD using this button. You'll need to press "OK" after each change to get the player to accept it.

I have mine hooked up to component. Is there any way to send SD-DVD at 480i out of the HDMI port?

My experiments on this and those of others say no. Here are a couple of threads on the subject, found by doing a simple search in this sub-forum on "480i":

There are lots of combinations of possible configurations here (SD vs. HD DVD, copy protected vs. not copy protected discs, firmware version). I suspect that only the player architects could say for sure if 480i over HDMI is impossible in the 1G players.

This is not enitirely true.Typically it will send 480i via component only if the material is non-copywrite material. In my case it was sending for copywrite as well.
