A UPS Backup that doesn't have an audio alarm when power is out??

Hi,

I have a Mits WD65732 television. Everytime I lose power, all my settings are completely erased and reset to default. This is very very annoying.

So I want to buy a UPS battery backup to keep the settings. However, it will be installed in the back of an entertainment center and I will not be able to get to it very eaily.

When the power goes out, I want the set to keep getting enough power to remember the settings. I don't want, however, a constant audio beeping telling me the battery is on.

I can't seem to find a single UPS solution that does not have this alarm "feature". Does anyone know of one?

Thanks.

I cannot give you a specific model number, but some of the APC devices will allow you to do this, disable the alarm. However, to do that, you will need to first hook your UPS up to a computer, then use the included software to set the UPS options.

What I am not sure of, is what will happen when you disconnect the UPS, and move it to your entertainment center. I would think it would remember the options but don;t know for sure.

Even if you could find one it is unlikely that it would be able to keep the TV powered for more than a few minutes unless you buy a very large, very expensive UPS like the kind used for servers, etc. (I have one that can keep three servers running for 30 minutes). I have a Monster UPS-500 on my Sony 50XBR1 and it can only keep the TV running for a few minutes, just enough time to shut the TV down with the bulb fan running.

I am surprised to hear that the much praised Mits WD65732 TV loses its settings if the power is lost. Have you contacted Mits about this? Have you posted about this issue in the Mits xx731/732/831 owner's threads to see if other owners have the same problem.
Some UPSes allow you to disable to audible alarm (among other things) in firmware. The APC SmartUPS line of UPSes allows this. You can usually pick these up pretty cheaply at commercial bankruptcy auctions.

Alternatively, if you find a UPS you really, really like but cannot disable the audible alarm, you could take matters into your own hands and remove or damage the beeper.

I remember reading about this when I was specing out my new television originally. I love the set, but once the power went down and I lost all my settings, so I guess its true. I have them written down, so its no big deal really.

Thanks for the recommendations. I also thought about damaging the speaker myself. I even took one out of the box at CompUSA today to see if I could find where the speaker was located. Lol.

Yes, this is the question that remains after doing a couple of more hours of research on this. I looked closely at the manuals for both the APC Smart-UPS and the Belkin with the Bulldog software. In both cases, it almost appears that the unit has to be connected to a PC with the appropriate service software running.

I see options to set the alarm on or off, but it looks like a toggle flag in the software itself. It located in the same place that the "shutdown computer in 10 minutes", and "save opened files", etc. is located.

This leads me to believe that the settings are actually communicated through the serial or usb interface when power is lost. I can't find a definate answer to this though. I am dependent on someone that has tried this before. None of the amazon reviews mention this issue.

Any more information would be greatly appreciated.

I have two APC smart UPS's. I have turned off the alarm when power fails. You will need to hook up the UPS to a computer to set the options like a previous post said, but you can then disconnect the computer. The UPS will remember your settings. You will set the UPS to "Never beep".
Sorry to revive an old thread, but this has been bugging me, too, and I wanted to document my findings somewhere.

In my audio rack, I have an HDTiVo and a PS3 that I want on battery back-up, but no PC to talk to the UPS.

I bought a CyberPower CP850AVRLCD. I connected it to my PC and installed the "Power Panel" software, and set the alarm to silent.

Once hooked up in my rack, the silent setting didn't stick, and unplugging it caused the alarm to go off. However, this alarm is MUCH more gentle than an APC alarm. The CyberPower just softly beeps a couple of times every 60 seconds. My APC screams a continuous tone at unbearable volume.

Anyway, there is line in the owner's manual about SILENT MODE. Press and hold the function key for >3 seconds (a crossed-out speaker icon appears on the LCD display). THIS WORKS! Unplugged the power, and no alarm at all.

Hope this helps someone.
