A1: Why is it so hard to download a firmware update?

3138 Views 42 Replies 31 Participants Last post by  jcg
I need to get the latest update to the A1. However, every time I plug my modem into the damn machine, I go through the stupid disclaimer, and then I get a cannot connect message. WTF? I had no problems updating my PS3's fireware right after, yet, I cannot get the A1 to download the latest firmware. Is anyone else having problems getting the damn machine to download it? Or any of them for that matter as this happens with EVERY update.

I actually have the same problem with the A2. I haven't looked into it much since the current firmware hasn't given me any problems so far anyway.

Weird - I have never had a single problem updating the firmware on my A1 -- I have done each update as it comes out. I have a wired Ethernet connection to a router connected to a Comcast cable modem. Never an error message or a failed update.

What kind of Internet connection do you have for the modem?

First set up your ethernet settings. Then apply, and TURN OFF the unit. Then turn it back on, and it should connect now.
tip,

download the iso and burn a firmware disk.

you'll be upgraded and running in just a few!!
I did it both ways...1.3 via ISO and 1.5 via download. Could not have been simpler. Of course i read the directions both times

This brings up the only sore point I have with Toshiba. Toshiba: let people download the update to a memory stick so they can use one of those USB ports on your machines to install the firmware. Of course you'd need an update to be able to do that but it stops these sort of issues and provides immediate access to the latest firmware updates. Just like my HP 1080p set. The firmware updates are on their site. Downlaod to a memory stick, plug stick into set's USB port and voila with update. No fuss no muss.
Can someone point me to an ISO of the latest firmware for the HD-A1? Thanks.

Ditto here on no issues with the ethernet firmware update. I'm using a Powerline ethernet adapter.

To OP: It would also help stating what your player's settings are, so that some could offer alternative suggestions to try.
Thank tundrSQ. Have there been any reported problems with the latest firmware? I have had a few freezes and other playback failures recently, but I don't want to blindly trade current problems with fresh new worse problems. Thanks for the help.

My first attempts at downloadng the firmware updates were very frustrating. I knew I correctly configured my ISP and for some reason I couldn't get past the disclaimer. I felt like an idiot once I figured out what the problem was, so I'll save you some embaressment at the sake of my own, I had the wrong option highlighted. It was as simple as that, you might believe you have the correct option highlighted to receive the updates, like I did, when in fact you may not. Give it a try, next time you're at the disclaimer screen, highlight the other option. If anything I'm the only one that will look like the fool for not getting it right the first time.

Well I have a comcast cable modem.

As for settings, what do you mean? The player's setting should be what they were when I downloaded every firmware update.

In the players setup screen for connection enable DNS and DHCP or whatever it's called. On the same screen press "Confirm" wait a second or two then press "Yes" and exit setup. Turn the player off for a minute then back on and try the update again. If the player still doesn't connect to the Toshiba server you most likely have a firewall or something on your LAN stopping the connection.

I'm confused, in your original message you said that you had no problem updating your PS3, but were experiencing problems only with your Toshiba. So, it sounds like your PS3 maybe correctly configured and your Toshiba may not. If it isn't related to an obvious mistake like I made, that I would recommend going over your ISP configuration on your HD DVD player, consult your manual or download the PDF manual from the Toshiba site, it's a very easy process to configure your player for ethernet.
It's all depends! Every time I connect my A2 to take available firmware update, it always work immediately. There are a few factors that will make it seem hard, like your A2 setting for Internet connection, the router, etc. But I'm been very fortunate to not have this kind of problems you and some others are having. But then again, if you sent in the paperwork that came with your unit to tell Toshiba you want to receive updates by mail, then you will have your software update delivered soon to you house.
Its really not hard. Just burn it to a disc and load the firmware. Go to download.com, download Cheetah burning software. Then download the latest iso firmware from toshiba. Burn it into a CDR disc and thats it!
I just got it off the Toshiba Canada site and burned it. The update took around 10 minutes, it was real easy. With that said, I don't think I'll ever attempt an ethernet firmware update, just seems like too much wasted time.

I just hooked up to do a new download, couldn't figure it out, and then saw this post. Turning off the machine is KEY -- even if the player acquires the right settings, it's not going to work unless you power down, then turn back on and connect.
