Tosh will be letting us know when there is an available firmware upgrade (a postcard asking Tosh to let you know was included in the box).

At the moment, Toshiba is working on a firmware update with DTS-HD support. DTS apparently showed HD-DVD players running a beta version of this new firmware with DTS-HD support in their booth at CES.

I thought that postcard was for getting the updates via CD automatically in the mail. Was it just a notification update? Or will they be sending CD's with new firmware to people who sent in the card.

GRRRRR. this sucks.

what they can fix something in a month on the 2nd gen players and it's been how long now on the A1/XA1? that is truly frustrating.

robert are they even working on one? can you find out? i'm starting to lose a little hope here.

What G1 issue are you having that you are most concerned about?

-Robert

dvi, btb/wtw and black crush

i have all 3 and it's stopped me from buying any more hd-dvd's. well, okay that last part was a lie. but it really does suck robert. there are a ton of folks with the same issues. i don't understand what the hold up is--especially if they can respond to the same issues so fast on the A2/XA2.

would you mind asking your contacts? there are a lot of people waiting on this and i think we've been pretty patient.

Hello,

There was quite some tests done on HD-E1 v1.2 here and it appears the DVD upscaling is still not what we hoped it'll be (looks way better in A1)

Also v1.2 did not fix some EDID problems and not fix DVI 4.2.2 + 0-255 output...

(aka BTB/WTW and/or Black crush)

Reports on CUE fix are still a bit confusing, not sure that was addressed...

Until the firmware fix is in if anyone's interested I found a workaround method that is successful in bringing up shadow detail and helping with the black crush issue.

If any of you have a display device which can be tweaked via the RGB contrast and brightness either in the user or service menu, you need to go to the 'Green Brightness' control and pop in AVIA or some other useful calibration disc and go to the brightness screen with the moving gray bars.

Once there, bring the green brightness up until you can see the moving gray bars. Before I did this, I couldn't find these bars no matter what I did with the main brightness control. Once you've brought the gray bars into view, you will now have excellent shadow detail and will need to re-tweak all of your colors and of course redo the main contrast levels too. This will take lots of give and take with all of the RGB controls and the contrast and brightness settings but eventually I have finally calibrated my A2 to show an image that is way better than any of the NFL games I watched over the weekend.

Now I'm not missing anything in the shadows that the director wants me to see.
Contrast is amazing too along with flesh tones, colors, saturation etc....

I haven't noticed anyone but myself discovering this workaround. Hopefully someone else will find this useful.

My display device is an Optoma H78 DC3 projector 720p. I also have a Pioneer 64" CRT RPTV with analog inputs. The above workaround was obviously only for the projector's HDMI/DVI path.

Now I don't know if I should do the firmware update because of all of the time and trouble it took me to get the image to where it is now. With my luck, I'd end up worse off somehow and at the very least have to re-calibrate all over again.

We'll see what happens.
