ABC chicago HD, Issues

629 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  eric.krieg
Currently I receive my High definition via Directv and an OTA antenna. All my HD channels look great but the one channel I notice an issue with is ABC Chicago. The picture does not fit the SIDES of the screen. Not the top and bottom but the sides. There is about a half inch of black on the left side.

Also, I am watching the news right now and when they show text at the bottom of the screen it is cut off.

I'm watching on a Samsung DLP and do not notice this on any other HD channels. Is this the way ABC is broadcasting?

They do a combination of crop and stretch for 4:3 original material on 7-1 in 720p that does what you describe. Most sets don't show any sidebars because of overscan. They also do a straight 4:3 on 7-2 with full sidebars like the other stations do but in 480i.
Ahh, so it isn't my set, necessarily.
No. They need to change their policy on this.

They did. They made OAR available on 7-2.
7.2 had been showing OAR for quite some time, but now it is often running a completely different set of programming.
I thought they quit doing that but it looks like they are doing it again. Bummer.
I connected my Samsung SIR-T351 to a Samsung LTN 1765 on Tuesday, using a generic OTA rabbit ear antenna. Auto program found all the channels and life was sweet. I live around Chicago Ave. and Ashland, pretty close to the Sears.

Last night ABC 7 quit. "No Signal" and it dropped out of my favorite channels.

Any ideas what happened? Is it me or them?

Thanks,

Steve

I had to manually add channel 52 to my scan. For some reason they were not remapping to 7-1, 7-2 last night. they were showing up as 52-1, 52-2.
meany,

Thanks. After I posted I went to the tuner and ran through all the channels and found 52-1 and 52-2 and added them as you did.

Is the remapping on the tuner side or the transmitter side? My problem or theirs?

I appreciate the reply, I'm a newbie (2 days with HDTV and I'm spoiled for life!)
I too was having the same problem of 7.1 and 7.2 not showing up. So I just tried a rescan as suggested and there it is at channel 52.1 and 52.2. A great work-around until they get this fixed.

As for the different programming on 7.1 and 7.2, I actually enjoy the change! It allows me to tune into a commercial-free rebroadcast of the news whenever I get a chance. Nice work WLS! :D

This is WLS's problem. They will need to fix it.

Finca,

Same problem here. I just got my new Zenith 32V37 yesterday.

Heard in my house: "Where the F*** is Channel 7!!!"

I went to Antennaweb and found the UHF channel that they broadcast on, and keyed it in.

"Oh, there it is. Never Mind".

My wife puts up with a lot, I'll give her that.

I'm 20.1 miles from Hancock, I've got the biggest antenna made (Phillips Magnavox makes it) on the roof, and I still don't get WBBM without dropouts. The signal meter bounces all over the place, from "Bad" to "Excellent" (I would estimate from 40 to 90%).

Besides WBBM-DT being a crappy channel, I figure that my antenna may be moving in the wind. I bet I also have the main Ohare landing pattern (down the Kennedy) in my line of sight. That can't be good for low power reception.

I would love to get on the roof to tweak it, if we ever got a nice thaw. You know, attic installations may not be the best, gain wise, bet they are way more conveniant and way safer for tweaking. Anyone considering a self installation should keep that in mind.
