Abc Sucks!!!!

1584 Views 26 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Randy Boecker
Per my friend who is chief engineer at WTVD in Durham NC: ABC JUST cancelled the HD feed (at the LAST possible minute according to him!) of tonight's airing of "Apollo 13."

Back to CBS... FOR GOOD!

Maybe they discovered a problem?
I'm glad you're taking it so well. I've had HDTV for almost 3 years and I don't ever remember looking forward to ANYTHING more. I am "fit to be tied" as we say in the south. as he!!

BTW ABC... I vote with my remote control and my vote DOES count. Read between the lines. ;)
Was really looking forward to Apollo 13 on HD. This does suck! :(
Geez guys, God forbid it's a technical glitch or something... :p
roddie:

With all due respect, this is not home video and this is not your local affiliate. This is the BIG leagues. Commercials ALWAYS go off on time. Programs ALWAYS start on time. If film breaks a redundant system picks it up before we ever even know it. Seems the NTSC started w/o a hitch. Commercial spots=revenue. Go figure. Maybe they should have just cancelled from 8:00-11:00 since they had "technical challenges." Yea right... Maybe they could have just "gone black" for three hours. They do it all the time, right? this is OLD TECH now guys. "Newness" hasn't been a VALID excuse for years. Ask CBS. ;)

There's no excuse for this. THAT'S the bottom line. You can defend therm all you like but that does not dismiss the fact that HD is secondary to them and it ALWAYS will be for the forseeable future. Just further proof IMO.
LearningMan,

I did, they didn't know why the second episode of CSI on Thursday night wasn't broadcast in HD either. ;)

1) I'm not defending anyone. I was just commenting on some of y'all freaking out like some bigwig at ABC tonight decided, "Screw those AVSForum folks, I don't feel like showing 'Apollo 13' in HD." Don't take it so personally... I'd bet that the reason it's not being shown in HD is closer to a technical issue than it is to peeing off LearningMan. :D

2) *OF COURSE* it's secondary to them and it will be until the majority of their viewership cares about it. How can you make sense of anything else? They're a business..
OK, maybe it's not the end of the world, but I cancelled my night out to watch based on the link Hardrock put up to ABC. At least when other programming gets cancelled they run a scroll explaining.

I applaud the prez for making the step, cause it could all be in lo rez, but it sure would be nice to inform us when programming is not going as planned!!
What is the deal here? They listed "Apollo 13" as HDTV and didn't air it. I guess since they haven't listed "The Emperor's New Groove" as HD - it probably will be. All of the following programming sites list it as such:

Excite TV

TitanTV

HDTV Galaxy

During "A Bug's Life" a couple of weeks ago they aired a promo for "The Emperor's New Groove" and said that it was going to be in HD.

I'm hoping so, I've always wanted to see a cartoon animation in HD. :)
yeah it was a bummer, as last night was the first night I found the magic two foot area my rs bowtie needs to be in to get ABC they are low power here, I messed around two hours before I found it. I really wanted to see this movie.

maybe it was a mpaa conspiracy :p

I like hardrock's sig.

I believe there is an option with the new forum software that you can set so you won't see any sigs. You might want to turn it on. I think there is also an option that is the equivalent of a killfile. I've wanted this feature for a long time.
Here is a message I got from the Director of Engineering, Kal Hassan, of Chicago ABC station, WLS-TV. It seems this was a last minute decision by some "unknown entity" at the Head Office in NY, because even Kal(an AVS Forum member) wanted to see this movie in HD. I wonder if it was a copy-protection issue... hmmm...

Kal's message follows:

****************************************************

Before you guys complain, I have an update regarding "Apollo 13" show on Saturday 10/13. In my previous e-mail I said that this show would be in HD. It was not. I was called by our Master control that the network was not sending this show in HD. I called NY Master control, and they confirmed that the show was not being uplinked in HD. I will try to find out about the

snafu...because they had clearly indicated to us that the show was going to be delivered in HD. It would have been a great movie to see in HD!

Sorry!

Let's please get serious here folks (with no disrespect for the posting party)... This is NOT the kind of issue that would come up with a "major" network player at the last possible moment. They don't play that way. That's amatuer crap and if it's happening to ABC, then that makes them an amatuer network.
Give ABC a break. We are in a transitional period and there will be problems from time to time. Technology is not perfect.
Kipp,

There are at least two of EVERTHING at ABC to do HDTV, including two identical control rooms. Whatever caused this screwup (and maybe the Sunday Emperor incident, too) must be pretty big, or perhaps even deliberate. Maybe we'll find out when the open for real business tomorrow.
Abc Sucks? C'mon!

CBS tries and succeeds mostly.

ABC tries and fails sometimes.

NBC SUCKS!!!! They don't even try!!!

FOX SUCKS!!!!! They have the Super Bowl and still can't be bothered!!!

Let's take it easy on ABC. Yes, they have failed, but in comparison, they hardly suck.

I personally though this would get them on the map. What a great movie to debut in HD. I immediately tuned in and once I saw no HD, bye bye ABC. I too was disappointed.
