ABC, the next NBC

3975 Views 40 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Knicks_Fan
While flipping thru the channels tonight, ABC has a promo bug up for the Lost season premiere, which isn't until 1/31 up during Wife Swap. Time to post some more network head addresses. Remains to be seen if HD programming will be affected.

Edit: It's up during SuperNanny. It wasn't on last night during Boston Legal, thank goodness.

Edit: No sign of it during "Cashmere Mafia"

This is truly a shame...I remember not long ago reading a thread here praising ABC for their great presentation with minimal on screen graphics. Hopefully, this will only affect SD viewers.

Don't hold your breath.. because it will move to HD. I don't know why everyone is surprised by the networks jumping on this idea. With DVR's and etc.. taking over. Even more stuff will be put on the screen.

It doesn't bother me that much... I have trained my eyes to deal with it.
I guess the reason for this spam text is the WGA strike and NBC and ABC want to make sure you know new episodes of shows will still be airing.

That abc promo spam is worse then NBC.

Abc started this text spamming on the daytime soaps the end of last week promoting the return of some actress to one of the soaps.

On the SD feed the lost promotion text has a bad vibration on screen.

Are they spamming the HD feed to?

I guess I'll find out at 10pm.

I just watched last week's Wife Swap and they had a large WIFE SWAP text bug to the left of their logo during the show.

I flipped over to ABC HD after 10. The "ad-bug" is not on during that pathetic trainwreck "Cashmere Mafia". I can only hope ABC respects their good HD programming as well. Keep the on-screen BS on the SD feed only!!

Taking Predctions: Who do you think is going to the "dark side" next? CBS or FOX?

They usually all copy each other, even when it's something bad. Remember when FOX and ABC abandoned the side-of-screen credits for lower third credits? CBS and NBC followed soon after.

Until the time that ABC does join the rest of the sheep, they will get my praise. But as soon as they start frakin' with the HD video, they will indeed get reamed a new A-hole on my website.

Update: Just looked at the SD video and the Lost text is next to the bug.
Fox first, then CBS last. As long as there is profit in it, then they'll do it.

However, note that a Lost promo obscuring half of the screen during Wife Swap is actually an IMPROVEMENT.

I think this mostly has to do with the networks having the ability to do this in HD. When NBC got the technology in place this year to do this, they started to do it. I don't think ABC or CBS have the ability to do this right now. I don't know about anyone else but to me it was obvious that NBC put a lot of money into HD technology for promos this year. While in previous years previews for upcoming shows and other network promos were in SD, this year, almost everything is in HD, including obviously an HD graphics package (which they have decided to use a bit excessively I'll agree). ABC and CBS promos are still in SD and even when I have seen graphics overlays on CBS programming it has always looked like an SD graphic overlayed on the HD video (check out a CBS HD football game and the on screen promotion of 60 Minutes for example).

I think the fact that ABC is doing the same thing that NBC is doing on the SD feeds but not HD is an indication that they just don't have the technology to do it in HD. That's really the only reason for the "clean" ABC HD. Once ABC and CBS gain the ability to do this, I'm sure they will.

I don't have a big problem with a lot of it. I understand they need to do some of it. There is a line though and I think the movie banners taking up the bottom 1/4 of the screen are unacceptable. Promoting network shows with "Now... Next... Next Wednesday" banners that last for a few seconds each is fine with me. I don't much care for the continuous promotions. Again I think that is excessive.

Maybe the next thing ABC can do is put a countdown timer up for when the new season of Lost actually starts (I am not going to do the math here).

I agree 100% with Jimp's last paragraph. Already e-mailed my local affiliate about it.
CW started doing this at the beginning of this season too....there are obnoxious pop up animations that tell you what show you're watching every time it comes back from commercial break..
nickdawg, that's an easy one here in NYC metro: Fox 5 ALREADY does it. My wife and I LOVE to catch the repeats of Seinfeld, but we both HATE the HUGE bug saying "for more Senfield info, go to ... " (their web site address).

I agree there. Remember that CBS, ABC and FOX don't letterbox SD yet. If ABC(for example) were to do the ad bug on HD, there would be the "floating logo" that's still in the 4:3 safe area. That would look really bad with that big ABC logo and the ad almost in the middle of the screen. At least NBC does what looks like a letterboxed version of the HD broadcast so the logos/graphics are kept to the sides of the screen on HD as well.

Yep, this seems to be the key. Whenever CBS/Fox/ABC upgrade their technology, they'll do it too.

It's a shame, but the golden days of clutter free HD are quickly dieing. It's really amazing to me that Fox doesn't even show a national bug most of the time on the HD feed.
Wow, from the posts in this thread and the NBC one it sounds like ya'll would be happy with the constant bugs on the HD screen.
Don't confused acknowledgment of reality with happiness with reality.
There is a simple solution. Don't watch those networks who interrupt programs and send them a communication that you stopped watching their channel and the reasons why. Also, cancel your subscription programming. Maybe providers will take a more proactive approach in carriage negotiations with programmers if they lose subscribers.
