? about HD player PQ on an SDTV

I'm about to show my inexperience with all things HD, but I have aquestion about the 480i display from my new Tosh A3. I don't have my plasma set up yet so I decided to hook the A3 up to my 32" Panny CRT to be sure it worked OK (box was pretty mangled by UPS). My first impression was that the PQ for stationary and slow moving scenes was awesome but when objects are moving, they are pretty jaggy and I notice fine horizontal black lines across the objects. Is this something you would expect from a setup like this? Do you feel that the situation will improve when I hook the player up to my 50" plasma? TIA, Kirk.

Edit: After a little more research, can I assume that this motion artifact is due to the interlaced vs the progressive scan?

If you are sending 480i for SD DVDs to your TV, any issues you see and due to problems deinterlacing in your TV. MPEG2 decoders can have some issues but you are seeing deinterlacing issues.

larry
Thanks PS.

I never noticed this when I was using my previous (SD) DVD player though, that's why I figured it was an issue with the new player. Maybe I'll hook the old one back up just for comparison.

I was wondering about that but like I said, I'm pretty new to this stuff. I'm still going to swap back to the old player to see if the effect is still there. If so, I guess it's just my tv.
Currently I'm using my A3 on my 27" Sanyo SD TV (composite), I haven't noticed anything when watching SD DVD's but when I through in a HD DVD sometimes I notice some artifacts and judder/Jitter.

I wonder if the A3 has some issues scaling the HD DVD's down to 480i?

My new TV is on its way, and I cant wait. Its going to be crazy going from 27" to 61"

Probably not. I just switched it out for my old one (Pio DV-578A) and the effect is still there. In fact the more I think about it, I remember noticing it when I first got the Pioneer. It's just a little more noticeable with the A3 because the picture is sharper.

I think I'm beginning to understand what progressive scan is all about. The player will do 480p but the tv won't so I've never seen the difference. I can't wait until I get my new set hooked up either. I'm anxious to see how good it will look.

Thanks guys, Kirk.
