If I have AC3 Dolby Digital Audio Output from my satellite dish plugged directly into my Amp will that then cause the "audio out of sync with picture" problem described in the FAQ? (See below). If so is there anyway I can loop the AC-3 sound into and out of the Replay so I don't loose the AC-3 sound? It would be a shame if Replay only provides me with normal Stereo/PCM sound output to my amp?

Since I've not bought my satellite dish yet I could buy a cheaper model without the AC-3 output if Replay won't let me use it anyway...

Thanks!!

"The sound is about a second behind the picture when watching live TV. What’s wrong?

You must listen to the audio that is coming from the ReplayTV instead of bypassing it with your receiver. It takes about a second to compress and decompress the video so that you can pause live TV."

How much good does satellite AC-3 sound do for you anyway? They only have it on a few channels, and even when they have it, most programming is in 2.0 anyway. I mean, I see the potential, but if you are that picky about quality, you're watching HDTV and listening to the AC-3 separately anyway.

Exactly!

In most digital cable and digital satellite broadcasts, "digital audio" means Dolby Digital 2.0. DVD style Dolby Digital 5.1 is appearing on a few movie and pay per view channels, but will be slow to appear in a widespread manner because cable doesn't support the hardware to distribute it properly.

As far as the Dolby Digital 2.0 goes, it doesn't much matter whether you

a)Do the D/A conversion in a DD Ready receiver, which then runs it through a pro-logic decoder and gives you 4 channels of audio OR

b)Do the D/A conversion in the satellite/cable receiver, send the two chanels of composite audio to a Pro-logic receiver (through the Replay unit) and get the same 4 channels of audio -- I for one, can't tell the difference.

As far as Replay goes -- they compress the audio anyway -- I suspect that digital audio would lose many advantages by compressing it.

It might be nice to have the AC3 output for the times when you want to watch PPV with it, expecially if you have a DD Ready receiver, surround system, and DVD player with it already.

So in effect its not worth buying a Dishnetwork 4922 receiver - I might as well stick with the 3922 if I use ReplayTV.... Since AC-3 is only on a few channels and Replay looses it anyway...

I have a 4922 Dish Receiver that has an optical out to my Sony Receiver. I also have a 3030 Replay.

What I did was output the digital sound directly to my receiver on video1 input. I then output my video from the 4922 directly to my TV's input2. I have the svideo of the 4922 going to the replay and the rca jacks of the 4922 going to the replay. I then have the replay hooked up to the input1 of the TV.

So when I want to watch a movie that is in 5.1 I just switch the inputs and watch the movie with no lip sync problems. No its not through the replay but we are only talking about a 2 hour movie. If I need to get up and don't want to miss the movie I can always just switch the inputs and watch it through the replay also (sacrificing the 5.1).

I read what ya'll said about the lack of movies in 5.1

I have to say I disagree. Starz East has one on almost every night in 5.1

Yes most movies are in 2.0 but those tend to be the older movies.

The movies I have watched in 5.1 that I can remember are: Mystery Alaska, The Insider and The Mummy. I know there is more but I cant remember the other ones. I think it would be a waste for you to get rid of your 4922. Just hook it up like I have it and you can have the best of both worlds.

someone had to say it....

Get yourself a DirecTiVo. It supports Dolby Digital 5.1 & records ~35 hours at PERFECT quality. Picture is great, sound is awesome and it comes with TiVo Software 2.0.

Well the problem there is:

a) I want DishNetwork not DirecTV

b) I just bought a 30 hr Replay through Mercata for ~$288

c) Even if I went Dishplayer instead they don't have a life time option just $9.95 a month forever for PTV!

I don't know why you disagree -- That was my point -- isn't Starz the ONLY channel to regularly have movies in 5.1? It was my impression that there wasn't anything much else with it except a few PPV broadcasts.

If I had the sat hookup, I would do exactly wht you are doing -- in fact, I have a similar setup -- I have my s-video go into Line 2 on the Replay, and the composite video go into VCR1 on my A/V receiver -- I feed the AC3 and the split composite audio into the VCR1 input on the receiver -- non-digital cable channels don't get the AC3 signal http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif -- and the composite audio into the Replay. I can watch a "live feed" -- and get the digital audio -- from the box through the receiver WHILE recording with the Replay

I will say that the optical digital stereo/PCM signal from my 4700 Dish box is much better than the high quality audio through the ReplayTV. Forget about DD only. The stereo/PCM quality is great! Unfortunately Replay doesn't support it.

Cheers

I also hooked up my DirectTV decoder into my receiver on one input and use another for watching my ReplayTV. This was necessary to avoid the lip-syncing issue.

Frankly, I hate that I have to do this. Unfortunately, there isn't going to be a quick-fix on this. I'm currently investigating the possbility of having a PVR in a home theatre PC (HTPC) in the future to avoid all this mess.

To me, it's not an issue of "don't buy a decoder that outputs digital sound", it's more an issue of "don't buy components that don't support the sound I want. I spent a few hundred bucks on my replay. I spent a lot more than that on speakers and an amp. I'm not going to disable full use of that over something as simple as a cut corner in a PVR.

When I was talking about DD on Starz East I was refering to just that one station. You are correct when you say that no other stations have it, other than PPV. But you said a few PPV. My PPV stations on Dish have almost every movie listed at 5.1

Anyways, all I was trying to say is you should keep your DD Dish Receiver. I think it is worth the little bit more money....

Exactly, even if the program is not in Dolby Digital, the PCM sound coming from the optical output is far superior to the composite audio. I don't care if you're watching a sitcom, if you have an optical audio output...use it! If you have Directv and a home theater, go with the TiVo/Directv combo.

You know, this is why I don't do Tivo or Replay. It's just too small of an incremental improvement over VCRs. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

But seriously, no matter how good the sound is out of a DirecTivo (and I am a proud new owner of one), it still won't receive Dish Network programming, as pdampier requires.

pdampier: Get the nice receiver and send one set of outputs directly to your receiver so you can enjoy 5.1 sound when you can. This is what those of us with HDTV have to do, and it's workable.
