What are the advantages of having a receiver decore an AC3/DTS source signal versus having PowerDVD/etc doing the same and then feeding the 6 channels output to an amplifier? The reason for my quesiton is the following:

I am using PowerDVD 4. The software is doing the acutual AC3/DTS decoding. I then feed the output of the SoundBlaster Audigy to the "Preamp IN" of an older amplifier (Pioneer VSX 9700S). I must say I am very impressed with the quality sound. How would the quality of the sound differ if I were to feed the SPDIF from the same card to an AC3/DTS receiver?

Thanks

Renato
