there’s a new maverick technology that might play a part in speeding up the digital switch-over.

A new system called accessDTV is supposed to allow consumers to receive digital television signals over their PCs. Consumers won’t have to buy an expensive TV set with a digital-TV tuner.

True, a lot of people might not want to watch TV on their computer, but speculation that any sizable adoption of this technology could have some impact, particularly in terms of reaching the goal of digital-TV receivers in 85 percent of households in 2006.

This throws a challenge to broadcasters. If digital-TV is available via PCs, does that count toward penetration figures? If it does, it may force broadcasters to accelerate their digital-TV efforts.

This certainly would be one way to force that 2006 deadline !
