I have the Zenith 318 upconverting DVD player connected to a 50" Panny LCD RPTV via DVI, upconverting to 1080i.

I've been pleased with this DVD player so far, but last night, I watched Mystic River, and there were numerous scenes with large dark areas, where you could see weird patchy blocks. I don't really know how to describe the effect... it kind've looked like there were patches in the dark scenes that look dithered. Has anyone seen this problem before? I'm pretty sure I've seen talks about this problem before on this forum, but I can't seem to find any of the threads on it.

It's commonly refered to as Macro Blocking or MB. DVB318 is one of the players had this problem. So are all the new Denon players. You should find the reference in 318 thread.

You may want to check your calibration also. Improper calibration will exaggerate whatever MB problems may exist with the 318.
