i will be using diy panels in the theater room and have been chasing down possible materials to use. not much availabe locally, just these: 5/8" armstrong ceiling tile (lowes, home depot) and 2" 800 series johns manville ductboard. i plan on framing, mounting and hanging these in the usual spots as mentioned throughout threads posted here (first reflection, front wall and lightly treating the back wall, including facing the covering on the back wall treatment facing out towards the room). bass traps will be made of 12" fiberglass pipe insulation (and the subject of a future thread).

i include the absorption coefficients of both the ceiling tile and the ductboard as well as oc 703 as reference:

Armstrong ceiling tile - 5/8†=

125 250 500 1000 2000 4000

0.65 0.38 0.30 0.78 0.77 0.71

Johns Manville ductboard - 2†=

125 250 500 1000 2000 4000

0.17 0.63 1.10 1.05 1.04 1.06

Owens Corning 703 - 2†=

125 250 500 1000 2000 4000

0.17 0.86 1.14 1.07 1.02 0.98

the available jm ductboard is very close to oc 703 specs. what are your thoughts on the ceiling tile? spacing the ceiling tile 1" away from the walls would be more streamlined than the 2" panels spaced 2" away.

I'd just about guarantee you that those ceiling numbers are NOT for an A mount (flat on a wall). Celing tiles by nature are normally used over a 12-16" air space. I strongly suspect those numbers are for a 16" space. No way is a 5/8" piece going to do [email protected]

Yes, and would be willing to bet on it with generous odds.
