Acoustic panel can I just use a piece of wood as a backing?

Can I just attack the batting material, and cover to a flat backing, or does the back part of the panel need to be open?

Open would be better acoustically, but you gotta do what you gotta do. If your batting isn't rigid you gotta attach it to something.
Your not going to get a uniformed look around the edges. The thickness if the edge will depend on how tight you pull the fabric and the density of your acoustic material. Plus your frames will look like pillows. Which, i guess would be a different style. But consistency would be difficult.
Or he could do a wood back with a wood frame.

You really want to try to keep the back of the panel open.. Even if the panel is 2" and used for first reflections. You still want to space it off the wall 2", to let sound come in from the back also...

I used a thin plywood for my two inch thick panels of OC 703 board. Then just drilled holes to hang it on the wall.

Make sure the fabric you wrap with is thin.I've seen some real fuzzy panels that don't look so hot.Another thing is that the fabric is acoustically transparent.
