Acoustic sub-forum or another site?

1563 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  rxtrom
Acoustic Panels are such a beneficial part of any HT but moderately confusing.

Should the topic not have its own sub-forum?

The Acoustic Panel master thread is a 190 page chat. Yes it has some questions and answers but alot of questions get skipped and its hard to navigate.

For example i posted this exact question in there and did not receive a reply. The current conversation continued on around my post.

Does anyone visit an A/V forum that has more info on APs?

Thanks,

Rob

Agree. Needs a sub-forum with stickies, FAQs etc. Thanks in advance!
Room acoustics and sound control are generally overlooked and can be confusing. My experience in the industry shows me that most are concerned with aesthetics and forget about sound which is 50% of the HT experience.
Very true.

Bump for more input.
Agreed. I am a neophyte when it comes to this and would love to learn. A subforum with stickies, FAQs, checklist, etc. would be most beneficial to those starting to build.
At the end of the day there are about 8-10 experts who post regularly on the acoustic issues, at any point in time 3-4 of them might be active. These experts make their money selling services or products. Most of them have FAQ's on their websites. Its a complex area, and we all struggle to learn the details. But I don't think your going to get more or better responses than we are already getting on this forum.

Spend some time in the sticky and reading threads here. Ask reasonable questions (not my room is 14 x 20, give me a treatment plan), seek out other sources (e.g Bob Golds website, Floyd Toole's book, etc). You'll get there. Or, if you are less patient, become a paying customer.

Finally, don't confuse sound isolation with in-room acoustics.

I appreciate the input.

While first hand expert advice is greatly appreciated and most valuable that would not be the purpose to create a sub-forum. Enthusiasts/Hobbyists who have done extensive research or who have reached out to experts in the past are great sources too. I think that most of avsforum consists of these types of people and many have benefited from their contributions.

Most people are DIY here in the dedicated theater area and would probably like to continue down that path in the area of sound control.

Agreeably I don't think we are looking for faster responses but rather a data repository and a place for FAQ's etc. like most other sub forums on this site.

There is a hangout where people discuss nothing but acoustical treatments. Not here but over in one area of the Recording Studio Design Forum. Unfortunately it does not get the traffic this forum receives. But some of the older threads may help answer questions. Also there is an interesting RTC calculator to model your room and the types of surfaces used.

I'm sort of the opinion that AVS has way too many forums, and should eliminate some of the lesser used forums.

Acoustic panels are a part of building a theater, and belong in this forum, IMO. It is complex, but no more complex than sound isolation, wiring & electrical, etc. The problem I see is when you create so many sub-forums, AVS forums becomes even more difficult and cumbersome to use for the newcomer.

However, I do agree that the acoustic panel sticky has also become an unuseable monster. Its terribly long, unorganized, and filled with conflicting opinions. I would be all for someone starting a new master acoustic treatment thread that was meant to be a sticky from the get-go. It should start with an index to some of the more helpful threads and sub-topics in this area, rather than just being a 200 page ongoing conversation.
There is quite a collection of links here (scroll down for the acoustics links), although I have only read a fraction of them:

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
