Acoustic treatment suggestions - accent wall

3585 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  LexaPr0
My wife would like to do a sort of board/batten accent wall on our front wall, something like this (this is not my room or photo)

Or black vertical shiplap.

Here is our front wall

Those pocket niches are decorative shelving, not for speakers. Speakers will be mounted, freestanding, or on a media cabinet inward from the pocket niches. I am going to try to have the LCR speakers sit away from the wall far enough to be out of the "alcove", but I assume I still should be treating the back wall and the side walls of the alcove.

Does anyone have any creative suggestions on achieving some acoustical treatment while delivering the accent wall to receive "approval"? Suggestions/pointers for material, etc?

Your wife has good taste with option 1 lol. You really want absorption on the front wall, so maybe panels with decorative wood designs as the front surface?

Actually, you could make a nice combination diffuser/absorber wall here if you wanted. make the full wall an absorption panel covered with fabric, and then put some decorative slats on the face to add diffusion.

They make sound dampening wallpaper. We are going to add it to our entire theater room.

How much visible wall space will there be around the TV?

To get that specific look I think the best option is to make a few large wood panels covered with fabric (with fiberglass or similar material inside), floor-to-ceiling, and place the diagonals slats on top of that. Simple but effective.
food for thought any pattern of panels on the wall is possible you can do one like your original inspiration photo if you want. From a clients space

BIG, how are all those panels hung on the wall? Do you mind sharing some insight as to how a DIY'er could do something like this? Much appreciated!
On that project we used strips of Velcro stapled to frames and the wall. This is a good primer on fabric frames. Fabric Frames

A couple construction pics from that project. We copied a random brick paver design, laid it out with tape and then made frames to fit the tape.

These are all very helpful, thanks! I think we will get creative with fabric/frames. She has settled on the vertical shiplap look, so I assume the tough part is going to be creating a very small bevel between the pieces and keeping the illusion of thin boards.

I need to spend some time going through all of the posts on that thread. Lots to digest there, I have no experience on acoustic panel construction at all.

A bit under 2 feet on each side.
The only part of the wall you will need to cover then is what will be visible after mounting the TV. Ideally, the visible area on the wall should be a shade of neutral gray illuminated by D65 bias lighting.

The overhead, left, and right perpendicular portions of wall that form the TV niche should be black fabric to minimize reflected light from both the bias lighting and the fluctuating illumination from the TV screen.

This is one of my favorite reoccurring pictures/spaces on this forum. Really speaks to me, seems cozy. Great colors too.
