My current 5.1 configuration is all Paradigm:

Front: Monitor 7

Center: CC-370

Rear: Mini-Monitor

Sub: PS-1000

I have a few questions:

Theory: Why are two rear mono speakers better than one?

Speakers: Would a pair of ADP-370s work just fine for the rears and then I could move the Minis to the sides?

Thanks,

Jerry

In doing a search and reading some previous input, it appears the approach would be to move the direct firing Minis to the rear and get a pair of ADP-370s to take over the surround work on the sides.

Thoughts?

ADP's for the sides and mini-mons for the rear is similar to what THX recommends. I could be wrong on that, but I think it's the case. That's the same setup I'm running except I've just gone to the Studio version. However, I really enjoyed it with the monitors.

ADP's for the sides would be my choice.

To avoid front/back reversals, where sounds along the centre line can sometimes fool our ear/brain mechanisms into thinking the the sound is coming from the opposite direction. This is why THX and DTS and Dolby all recommend using 2 rear speakers for their mono surround-back channel on EX/ES soundtracks. This problem usually occurs with sounds directly behind us but not directly in front of us because our hearing acuity is terrific in front but lousy behind our heads. That's why the surround-back channel is the only channel where it is recommended that 2 speakers be used. Reversals are an old and a well documented psychoacoustic phenomenon. Fortunately, the solution is incredibly easy: simply use 2 speakers instead of one. For a more thorough description, read this post .

If you like the sound of your current surround speakers, why not just get another pair? This way, you'll have the same speaker at all 4 surround locations; surround content will sound consistent as it moves amongst the 4 speakers.

Best,

Sanjay
