Right now I am using a 5.1 system with a matching speakers and a REL STORM III. I would like to add a second sub to get a little bit more output. So is there any need to have matching subs? Then is there any software that could help assist in placing the subs and speakers to help control room modes?

Not sure about your plan, but I added a secound sub to the center channel and got great results. Setting CC to large drives a little more bass through it that another sub easily handled. The sub sums the input when tapped into the left channel. Crossover set to 80 hz like I normally do with main. I think it's more worthwhile than just adding another sub to the other channel......more midbass control of vocals at CC for example.
