Adding EX to the Atlantic Tech's 350 series-which speaker?

224 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  akm3
I have the Atlantic Tech's 350 series speaker. I'll be adding a denon 8300 three channel amp and the Smart Jr EX decoder to the Denon 5700 for EX sound. My room will require me to mount the speaker above a large opening in the room (behind the couch). So the speaker will have to be somewhat small and around 10 lbs, or so.

Here's what I have been told:

AT's Tech person said: A dipole rear(s). He suggested the rears from the 170 or 270 series.

Onecall's Tech person said: The center speaker from the At 350 series. If I used dipoles or a smaller speaker, I shouldn't even bother. It has to be a center speaker to pick up the necessary lower end frequency.

What is the right answer?

Thanks for your suggestions

The debate wether to use dipoles or monopoles isn't solved as far as I'm concerned. But using the center channel "Because of the bass" is stupid. Personally *I* would go with the dipoles, and set their crossover frequency to whatever your side speakers (presumably also dipoles) are set to (80Hz I assume)

It's great to have all this great gear. But I'd instead put all that money into software (Movies) I'd have SOMETHING TO WATCH ON ALL THIS GREAT GEAR. Doh!
Thanks AKM for your input.

Here's what a local retailer said:

If I use a dipole it might create a "null" in the back of the room. He suggested AT's 253 center channel. But he felt that any of the AT speakers would have the correct timbre match with the AT 350 series.

Ron
What are the dimensions of your room and describe this entrance (archway?) that you need to mount the speakers above. Also, where are your seats located?
