Highly recommend it. You can pause live TV and chase the program from behind.
You can record from 1 satellite channel and watch live OTA
You can record live OTA and watch 1 satellite channel
You can record 1 OTA channel + record 1 satellite channel + watch a prerecorded event from the HD
At the same time

I read that you have to register your hard drive with Dish for like $40 to get DVR capabilities. Is there any truth to that?

This was a smart move by DISH.

We currently have a VIP722 with 500 gig HD attached. It works fine, if a little slow when moving programming between it and the main receiver. We tried connecting it to the VIP211 and it could not be seen. The tech we talked to said that the drives on a 211 are formatted differently than the 722. Hate to buy another Hard Drive. Is there any way to move programming between the two receivers, or to get it on a single hard drive readable on both receivers? We take one receiver/tv combo with us when we travel in our RV. Not being able to merge the programming onto one drive would be a pain.

i can set it to record when the tv is off, but if i want to record something for my wife, unless its on that channel it wont record. if i try and turn the channel it asks are you sure you want to stop recording....
is this right.

I'm having some trouble recording OTA programs. The external/DVR on my 211 keeps skipping the programs that I try to record off the antenna. I keep the satellite box off when I'm not using it. Does the 211 have to stay powered on to record OTA programs?
