What would be the least expensive way to add SPDIF output to a Dell C600 laptop?

Is there a USB to SPDIF interface that would work?

I know of the creative labs exigy, but this is $150.

There must be a cheaper way!

No good or cheap way. Extigy does not pass true SPDIF--it down mixes to stereo and Dolby Pro Logic. There is a unit in Europe that has USB to SPDIF but not too much info on it (Asus brand?). Only way I know of is to buy a Dell 8100, Winbook Z series, or similar laptop with SPDIF built-in.

Very cool!

Does it work with PowerDVD??

Now my HTPC won't need a 'real' soundcard, and I cn temporarily use my laptop.

artur, thanks for the link. This is the first that I've heard of this device. Have you used it? How does it do with WinDVD or other DVD software player? I assume you can use Zoomplayer with this as long as you use WinDVD filter for audio. This is a great option for us with cheaper notebooks.
