I know, not another add storage thread. I've been reading up on adding some more storage space seeing how I only have 500gb. A have WMB all set up and everything is great but storage will be a problem sooner than later.

Here is my build from a few years ago:

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM

XFX HD-587A-ZNF9 Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card ...

Antec EarthWatts EA750 750W Continuous Power ATX12V version 2.3 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC ...

COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN3-GP Black Steel + Plastic and Mesh Bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with USB 3.0 and Black ...

GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGIBOX

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B - OEM

I just ordered a Bluray drive so that will take up a slot. Don't know which slot because I have forgotten everything about building a PC and will have to refresh my memory when I install it along with Colosuss.

I'm not looking for anything fancy or to expensive just need more storage. If someone could just give me a idea of what would work with this setup and some links to newegg, that would be great.

Here is more info on my motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128416

I'm really not to computer savvy, I just read a lot and do what already has been done. So I would like something pretty simple. Thanks in advance.

The main issue is that any large amount of storage today is not cheap . 3 years ago you could use 2 TB hd(s) for about $ 75 each . Now you will scratch and claw to get those same drives @ $100 ea. if your lucky .

My thought ?

Either cloud storage or build a server

Is there a reliable step by step link to setting up a server and what to buy? I see one in the sticky but 1st page doesn't really say "do this and buy this" for dummies like me.

Spend the $25 and buy Assassin's Server Guide. http://www.assassinserver.com/ His HTPC guide is basically the HTPC bible and well worth the money, and I have heard similar things about his Server guide. When I build my server (after clearing it with the wife to ensure my sanity and safety), that's my first stop.

Go to costco and buy one or two of the SEAGATE 3TB external drives for $109/$119 each.

It's a great value for price per GB ratio- it is a high performance drive. Costco is easy to buy from- with no rebates, shipping or BS.

For under $240 you can easily add 6TB of storage to your PC. That should give you some room.

When you run out of room in your PC for HDD's then I would build a server for a couple hundred bucks and set it up with FLEXRAID.

I do this.

I have a 12TB drive on all my PC's including laptop. It looks and acts just like an internal drive, but is really multiple drives in my server.

For Flexraid and Snapraid, you can buy any hardware you like as long as it works with Windows. You can use an old pc if you really wanted. In my signature is a link to my media server build, basic hardware and nothing special. It's been running great for 11 months 24/7.
