addition power for my Denon 3805

2033 Views 47 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  jigesh
The denon 3805 has an awesome processor with great options. My only issue is power. It states 120wx7 but I'm not convinced that it really is 120watts. Anyway, I'm in the market for an amp. I like both music and movies. Can anyone recommend a 3 or 5 channel amp in the $500-$1000 USD range?

It really is a great receiver, I'm just a power hungry kind of dude.

Thanks!!!

I have a 3805, which I use as a pre-pro but also to power the surround back EX ES etc, with my main power supplied by a 5 channel Rotel RB-985. It's a THX certified amp, that's probably been discontinued for awhile. However I love this amp for music & movies, and I'm sure whatever replacements have come down the pike are just as awesome. It was $999 retail give or take.
Thanks! I wonder if it's equivalent to the Rotel RMB-1075 at 120wX5? How did it compliment the overall sound? Did it Warm up or give it more detail?

Thanks again!
Symform, I ordered my 3805 yesterday and will more than likely get an amp too. Probably a 2 or 3 channel because I think the Denon is very capable of driving 2 or 3 channels on its own. Like you, I am a power freak and am not totally convinced that the 3805 can put out 120 X 7 either.

I was told (I think by Chris) on this forum that a friend of his hooked up an Outlaw 755-5 $1,295 and it sounded awesome. I was looking at the NAD, ATI and Anthem (pricey) and Adcom. I haven't found a decent multi channel in the price range you stated new, but I have seen the Adcom 5503 3 channel used for under a grand on ebay. I think Rotel is a great piece of equipment but a little on the warm side for me.

Good luck on your quest. Every time I am close to making a decision, something else catches my eye!

Hey Mark,

Congrats on pulling the trigger on the 3805. I'd really wait and see if you think you need more juice for it. I, too, have thought that I'd need to get a 3 or 5 channel amp for my Paradigm Studio's, but have decided to hold off for a while. There's no urgency for the amp as the 3805 does an excellent job driving a 5.1 setup in multichannel/DVD/etc. It may be a different story with less efficient speakers and a 7.1 setup, but for me the amp is on the back burner for a while.

Enjoy!

Jason
Hey Jason, it took the company I work for a while to get the 3805 in our order system. They called me yesterday and said they ordered it. Finally!

I am not going to get an amp yet as you and several others seem satisfied with what it does out of the box. That will give me more time to look around. BTW, I listened to the Anthem 5 channel on Saturday. Very accurate but I was not just blown over impressed. It was a very high end store and he wanted $700 OVER suggested list! Could have been the speakers. I don't believe you can choose for sure until it is set up in your own house. Everyone' taste is different, but at my age, I am losing some of the high frequencies so I don't mind a small touch of brightness. Perish the thought! :p

Hey guys,

I just got back from my dealer and they didn't have any Rotels, Adcom nor Outlaw. They stock NAD, Sunfire, B&K and Lexi-??? Can anyone comment on any of these amps? Right now, the Rotel is high on my list.

Jason,

What speakers are you driving with the 3805? They sound pretty efficient.

Thanks again.

You won't be able to hear Outlaw. They can only be purchased on-line at outlawaudio.com. They have at least a 30 day return policy so you can actually set it up in your room and see what you think. Again, the Rotel is pretty warm sounding - not my cup of tea. Go to the Rotel website and click on the "Dealer" link and it will show you where your nearest dealer is.

I think B&K and Rotel are similar in sound. I'm sure you will get all kinds of varying opinions on how they all sound. Bottom line is the only way to really tell is to listen at home.

BTW, Jason will probably chime in, but I know he has the Paradigm Studio series at least for the fronts. Sweet speakers. It's between those and Axiom for me.

Cheers

Symform,

I own the 3803 but I've auditioned the 3805 and both sound pretty much the same (3805 autoeq feature seems to be a great improvement though).

I can tell you the 1075 has been a perfect match for my 3803.... and yes, it seems to me the sound I obtained is somewhat warmer (look at my profile for further details about my gear).

So IMO any Rotel power amp will do a great companion if paired up to the 3805 :)

NAD amps are also great, but I haven't heard the B&K or Lexicons yet.

Symform-

Yeah, I've got the Studio 100's up front. Most of my use right now is 2-channel music and the Paradigms are freakin' awesome. I'll be getting the Studio center (either 470 or 570) and the ADP-470 surrounds this summer. I've been extremely happy with Paradigm speakers in the past, but even more so now with the 3805.

Mark-

Sounds like you need to find a new B&M if they're asking $700 over msrp! What's up with that?

The Anthem is a bit pricey, so I'm still looking around. I've put the amp purchase on the back burner for quite a while. I'll be picking up the other speakers this summer and plan to get one of Denon's new DVD players when they come out, hopefully equipped with DenonLink and less than the 5900, so the amp's definitely out for now. As I said, I don't really think the 3805 needs it. I do plenty of multichannel SACD and DVD-A listening, and the 3805 definitely holds its own even at pretty high volumes.

Congrats again on the purchase!

The rotel 1075 is a good value although I liked the B&K sound a little better.
Jorge - Thanks for the recommendation! I actually found a dealer that stocks ROTEL. He wants $1000 USD for the 1075. Isn't that MSRP? How much should expect to pay for a 1075? What's a reasonable price to pay? I really want one bad!

Jason - Pretty sick setup you got. I'm only running Energy C9 (mains), CC1 (center), CR1 surrounds and Velodyne SPL Ser. II (sub). Good enough for now. =)

It's not sick yet...only running an slight fever! Give me until the end of the summer and I'll have this ish up in the hospital! :D

I'm just finishing getting my woodshop setup in the basement of our new house. Next project is the cherry A/V cabinetry for the equipment and CDs. We've got about 850 discs in cardboard boxes in the corner of our living room right now. Needless to say it's a real PITA to find what I'm looking for...I usually stumble across something else first! :D

You're welcome :)

I think 1000 bucks is the MSRP, so you may obtain a good discount for the 1075 ;)

Oh well. Here in Mexico I paid 1600 bucks for my 1075!
One last question Jorge, is there a real noticable difference between the 3805 amp and the ROTEL amp? Clearer? Louder? I just want to make sure I can prove to my wife that the ROTEL is worth every pretty penny.

¡Mi esposa me dio mierda la vez última que compré algo que no trabajó bien! =)

Thanks!
I actually have another question in addition to the one above...After adding a seperate 5 channel amp, is it recommended that I re-calibrate my speakers?

Thanks again guys!

I think that everyone here will agree that anytime you change speakers or go to a separate amp, you need to re-calibrate.

And with the 3805, it's a snap!
thanks Jazzcat! I hope to purchase my new amp within the next week or so. Do you think there will be a real audible difference between the 3805's amp and a seperate amp (OUTLAW 100x7 or ROTEL 120x7)?
Hi Symform,

You may find differences mainly due to the interaction amp-speaker, but the amplifier itself is very important. IMO the 3805 would do a really good pre/pro as its amplifier section is relieved by the outboard amps.

I think Rotel is a great amplifier particularly driving British speakers (such as my B&W's) but the Outlaw would be a good choice as well.

Just one thing. The Rotel 1075 is 120Watts x 5. The 1095 in turn is 200Watt x 5. The higher the power output, the more headroom you'll obtain and the sound will be cleaner playing the sources at high volume levels ;)

I own a seven speakers set, so I drive the surround back channels with my Denon receiver while my 1075 is in charge of driving the mains, center and surrounds.

Finally I confirm you need to recalibrate your receiver, particularly if you're using a five channel amp and a 7.1 speakers set.

Good luck!

Please let us know how it turns out. I have a 3803 driving three hungry aerial speakers up front. I have been toying with the idea of outlaw monoblocks for the fronts and leaving the rears on the denon...

good luck!
