additional digital audio inputs?

305 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  pelly
I have an Onkyo receiver with only 2 digital audio inputs (1 optical + 1 digital coax). I currently have my dvd hooked to one and my cable box to the other.

Here is my question and I hope it is not too dumb. I am getting an xbox as well that I want to hook the sound up digitally as well. What options do I have? Is there such a thing as a digital splitter of some sort or am I stuck switching cables back and forth (obviously not a desirable solution)?

You can get an s-video splitter, or run your cable box directly to your monitor if it has two inputs.
Actually I was concerned about the digital audio inputs. I have plenty of component inputs on my tv.
I'm not sure that Artisan actually read your post.

Anyway, there are optical switch boxes that are a reasonabel price. Your local Radio Shack probably has one and they can easily be found online including eBay. Some are auto-sensing, others use a manual push button or remote selection. Prices range from about $25 to over a hundred for switches that include more than just optical (ie. optical, component, ethernet from Pelican).

No personal experience here, but I have heard they work fine.
Oops. Sorry, I did read that post too fast. I agree with Version.
My HD digital cable box from TWC has what they call pass though jacks, including toslinkand digital audio jacks, (as well as composite video, component, svideo, and composite audio). I hook my sons x-box into the cable box. When you turn the cable box off, whatever is in the bypass inputs goes through the box to the TV. Maybe you have similar inputs on your cable box?

YES...

There are separate digital switchers available..

Here is a link to Radio Shack's website, they have show a model 15-1586 that permits 4 optical inputs and 1 output. Cost is
If you want remote control of the switching, Inday makes a nice product:

Thanks for the replies.

I will check my cable box and see if it has any pass through jacks. If not, it looks like the digital optical selector is a very cost effective solution.
