Advice for a 3 speakers (front L/R + central) system

Hi there -

I've been reading the forum threads for a while now and I decided to go ahead and ask some a question that remain unanswered.

I am looking to buy a ~40inches HDTV and I would like to couple it with a decent AVR (I am looking for a somewhat future proof purchase and maybe HDMI audio capability) and 2 front speakers and a central speaker. I do not care much for 5.1 or 7.1 at that point (I've got a small living room).

1. Should I get 2 floorstanding speakers (say Athena or low-end Klipsch) + a central speaker or get a all-in-one HT system and just not use the rear speakers?

2. I don't watch too many action packed movies and bass performance is not critical for me - Can I rely on the floorstanding speakers bass performance for other kind of movies or do I want a subwoofer, even a cheap one?

3. I had very poor speakers until now, and everything will look like an upgrade to my ears. I will eventually buy a ~$1,500 speakers set at some point, but right now, my budget for speakers is more about in the $250-$400 range. Again, I looked at some Klipsch floorstanding speakers and central speaker combination - is there anything else that could fit my budget?

Thanks in advance for your input!

if you do not plan on a subwoofer anytime in the near future, that full range floor standing towers would certainly be a good consideration. Within you budget, this 3 speaker set from Jamo would fit your needs.

Thanks m_vanmeter!

This looks like it's what I'm looking for!
just wanted to thank you again for your suggestion - I had the JAMO set for a week now, and I simply love it.
