advice needed on receiver upgrade

556 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Nightmaster
I'm pretty new to HT and looking for some advice...

Currently have an Onkyo 502 driving 4 Polk R30's and a CSi25 center speaker, with an Onkyo sub. Can currently get a great price on a HK 635 ($699) or an Onkyo 703 ($599) at Circuit City.

Question is, would upgrading the receiver make a significant difference in overall sound quality versus the 502 I currently have? I'd say my listening is currently about 70% TV/DVD, and 30% music.

Or would either of these receivers be overkill for these speakers, so my money would be better spent keeping my current receiver and upgrading my speakers instead?

Thanks in advance!

I would upgrade my speakers first. The 635 is a great avr and I'm sure you would see some improvement in stereo listening but not to the degree that a speaker upgrade would help. I'd take the money and get a nice sub.

Ditto that.

You could get a pair of Polk Monitor 40s for $300 shipped from crutchfield.com and a b-stock Hsu STF-2 sub for $350 shipped from hsuresearch.com that would take your system up several levels.
The polks are a better match with a yamaha or an onkyo avr since they pair better ,and the polk audio monitor 50s are $399.00 and not $299.00 here is the link http://www.crutchfield.com/S-MKgSj0L...00&I=700MON50C . Lou

I saw the 702 on clearance for $499.99 at circuitcity, and the onkyo avr will give you a dramatic improvement over your existing setup since the more power you feed your speakers the better they will sound. . Lou

problem is, $500 for the 702 plus $400 for the Mon50s would be $900, or $200-300 above his budget.

The speakers he has coupled with the onkyo will make a killer combo and he really would'nt need to upgrade the speakers thus staying well within his budget. Lou

oh, I thought you were recommending the 702 *and* the Monitor 50s.

I can't imagine how the 702 could make that much of a difference if he keeps the R15s as his mains and especially not with the Onkyo sub.
Thanks for the advice guys!

Sounds to me like upgrading the receiver definitely wouldn't hurt, and would only help, but first I might want to upgrade the sub, and then the speakers, before anything else. Any opinions of the Polk PSW10 sub that comes free with a Polk speaker purchase over $499...?

What would be the best non-Polk sub I could get for the same $200, that would work well with a Polk setup?
I've heard the Polk subs at CC, and they uniformly sucked...incredibly weak. If $200 is your max budget on the sub then I'd get a 12" Dayton sub from partsexpress.com for $120 shipped...or maybe even 2 of them.

btw, crutchfield is a useful source of info but their prices are usually not very good compared to other online retailers.
I would stay away from the Polk subs. While they make speakers I like and considered before buying Paradigms, I've yet to be blown away by any of the Polk subs I've heard, and even tried one at home only to return it the next day. Lots of people here seem to love the Dayton and JBL E250 sub in the price range you're looking at; looking on audiogon and ebay can't hurt either :)

One other thing, jkherring- if you decide to go with a receiver as your initial upgrade it's not necessarily a bad thing by any means. If it were me I'd be looking awfully hard at the HK 635 you mentioned because it's a nice component you can build your system around for many years to come.
