Advice on a new TT setup?

498 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mcnarus

My current setup is a Technics SL-Q200 direct drive turntable with an Audio Technica AT216-EP cartridge. I'm running to a TCC TC-750 pre-amp to M-Audio powered "Studiophile" AV30 speakers.

Granted, I need a new cartridge, but for years I have been unhappy with the setup. I feel like I'm not getting the quality I could. I've looked at new tables - specifically the Pro-ject Debut Carbon - new speakers, cartridges, etc. and am a little stuck. A lot of audiophiles seem to recommend sticking to old used Technics or Panasonic tables. My budget is $800 but flexible. Where should I start? Seems like you can get a decent replacement cart for $60-$80, but you can also get a used technics table with a cartridge for a little more.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

When was the last time you replaced the stylus?

Beyond that, the weak point of your system is obviously the speakers. That's your quality bottleneck right there.

Maybe 6 years ago? I am aware I need a new one, but again, have never been pleased with the sound quality, even with a brand new stylus. What speakers do you recommend? I've listened to the Pioneer Andrew Jones line in-store and was pretty pleased with it, but I'm not against spending more and getting something like the Wharfedale Diamonds. I'd need a receiver as well, since the M-audios are powered.
My general advice on speakers is, buy what you like. Beyond that, brands I like include Infinity and PSB.

My other general advice is to put most of your money into speakers, not the receiver.

But you wouldn't recommend replacing the table itself? Didn't know if the technology had improved since 1980 or if I'm better off just getting a new stylus and sticking with it.

Not on your budget, or anything close to your budget. You need speakers, period. Diverting funds to anything else would be a waste at this point.

The technology basically stopped cold in 1983. (Guess why.)

I don't know anything about your cartridge. You might consider replacing the whole thing. But speakers first. Sorry to sound like a broken record.

I'll need a receiver first. I haven't looked at stereo receivers in about 10 years, any recommendations?

Honestly, they're not all the same, but they're close enough to the same that only minor features and modest power differences distinguish them. Among the major Japanese makers, Onkyo seems to be the low-price leader. Harman Kardon makes at least one with a digital input, but that wouldn't seem to matter for you. Yamaha, Denon, you really can't go wrong.
What do you have against the M-audio speakers? I have a pair of the AV40's for my wife's computer, and they are a very nice sounding little speaker.

Fair enough, though based on my experience, I would never recommend an Onkyo to anyone. I had 2 HDMI boards fry on 2 different receivers, and based on Amazon reviews, I am certainly not alone. I mentioned that I was looking for a receiver to a co-worker, who said, "I'll sell you my Onkyo for cheap, the HDMI doesn't work, though". Never again...but I'll look into the other brands, thanks.

Well, stereo receivers generally don't have HDMI. I bought an Onkyo for my Dad some years ago which worked out fine.

Any company that advertises a "3-inch woofer" should have the FTC up their a$$.

Seriously, I have nothing against them, and if you like yours well that's great. But the question was, what's the weak point in the OP's system? And the weak point in the OP's system is unquestionably those speakers.
