Advice on buying the right HD ready TV

I am in the market for a new TV. I am looking in the $2000 to $3000 range. I have been looking at the wide screens between toshiba and mitsubishi. I have never been fond of projection tv's. I've been watching tv on a 27" Sony trinatron tv for the last 15 years. I definetly want bigger, but am not sure if I will be happy with a projection tv. It seems like you really have to be sitting directly in front of them to get a clear picture. Perhaps its just a matter of getting used to it where ever you sit in the room. The sweet spot is approx. 8' to the tv. The room I have designated for this is aprox. 11.5' x 15.5', so for family veiwing not everybody can sit directly in front of the screen. I have just invested in a quality home theater setup. I am also purchasing a Microsoft XBOX gaming console, which will support HDTV and Progressive Scan (480p and720p) for both gaming and DVD applications. Perhaps a tube tv would be better for this situation? Can anybody help me out. I appreciate any input.

I guess part of your question is whether you should buy a projection TV or Direct View and the other part is should you purchase a HD Widescreen if you go with a Projection TV. The horizontal viewing angle on a projection is not as bad as I thought it would be. However, the vertical viewing angle is horrible. You can't lay on the floor or stand above the TV and expect to have a decent picture. You need to decide what you are going to use your TV for the most. DVDs, 4:3 material, HD?? Either way you go, I would purchase a HD ready TV. Good Luck! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
Greg, I'm in the same boat. I'm on the market for a direct view TV in th $2000-$3000 as well. I can stretch a little bit on the budget. I don't like the RPTV because of the viewing angle, especially vertical as bmello mentioned.

I'm looking at the RCA 38", Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Phillips (all are 34" 16:9). I just don't know what to get at this point. I guess I'll have a better idea if I know what features to look for. So, What should I look for in a direct-view HDTV? I know I want a HDTV tuner built-in.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Btw, GREAT FORUM!!!
