I would appreciate the input of those "in the know" here - because I am NOT. Let me first tell you the situation - I have NEVER been able to afford anything near high end gear, 65 now and on S.Security.
I was reading here the other day about whether it is good to have your tweeters in your mains speakers at ear level. Decided to TEST this out with my old big box Jensen speakers (15"W 6"Mid 3" Tweet) purchased in the 80's. I put them up on boxes and WOW! what a difference - hear much more and more spacious sound. BUT that got me thinking about replacing them with space saving towers - many which have the tweeters about ear level. I am presently using a SONY STR_DE835 DD Receiver; the BIG Box Jensen Mains;Sony 8" SUB; Cerwin Vega Center; and Warfdale 2 way rears.
I cannot afford to go much over $150 for the pair of Towers - - - I have been following many on EBay and reviewing them as I bookmark and watch them - BUT - many, of course are closing out of my budget. There are two at least that I would like to ask you opinion on though and see what you guys might think: 1) I can get delivered a pair of NEW Acoustic Research S40's for around $144. and 2) SONY SS-MF650's for about $159.
The AR is a 2 WAY, the SONY a 3 WAY with dual 6 1/2 mid woofers. The AR S40 gets pretty good reviews. Would I lose the FULL sound that my BIG Jensens produce by going to a smaller 2 Way or 3 Way Tower? I have always had problems understanding alot of the dialogue with my present set up even though this is the 3rd and best Center Speaker I have ever owned - - - could one of these towers IMPROVE that?
Any advice/help appreciated.........
