Advice on redrtilling holes for a wall mount

230 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Colm

I live in a nearly 100 year old stone home with plaster walls, making finding studs a real PIA.  So, after finally finding the studs to pre-drill the holes for a Peerless-AV SAL770 wall mount, I managed to make two mistakes.  First, the holes ended up being about 1.5" to low for ideal viewing, but something I was willing to just live with.  Second, I managed to drive the upper left lag bolts/screws in at a 15 to 20 degree angle.  I think the plaster crumbled such that the path of least resistance ended up being at that angle.  Anyway, I was wondering if I could just start over with holes about 1.5" higher?  Or is there a recommended safe distance for drilling new holes into an exterior, load bearing wall?  Should I fill the existing holes anyway?  If filling the holes is necessary, how should I go about it?

Yes, drill the top hole, install the mount with the lag bolt and snug it up. Use a level to make sure the mount is level

THEN drill the bottom pilot hole and install the bolt.

This way you don't end up with issues as the mount is level and tight before the second pilot hole is drilled.
Moving the holes up is not a problem. It would be a good idea to use a masonry drill to get through the plaster and a wood drill for the stud.
