Advice please on 32" purchase. Sharp D62u or Sony xbr2???

Hi all, id really appreciate some advice on what route to go for a 32" lcd. Im looking strongly at two models, the xbr2 and the d62U

Ive been very impressed with sony tv's, but the sharp has a better dynamic contrast, and does 1080p. Not only that, its cheaper than the sony. I will be using it mainly for ps3 and blurays and sitting close to it, so the 1080p does matter to me.

So Whats the catch with the sharp? Still have banding problems? Is the d62u plagued with the same problems as the GP1u? The sharps specs are very attractive but feel nervous about going with one of their products. What do you all think? thanks guys

They both can be good sets- but the key word is "can." You just won't know until you get one home and try it out, so make sure to buy from a place with a good return policy if possible- like a no questions asked within 30 days (at least). Also when you get it home, play with it like crazy, check all the inputs (so have or borrow the equipment for this), etc. You probably don't need to buy extended warranty, but use the set a lot at first. And make sure to calibrate it before you think something is wrong with the pq- a lot of folks don't do this and think they have a bad pq. This all takes time, and that's why you need at leat 30 days with an hdtv, especially b/c you also need to play your ps3 on it for a bit to make sure all is well. I've heard good good things about the 37" 62U Sharp but mixed reports on the larger 62U sets- don't know much on the 32" 62Us. It sounds like you really want 1080p so that makes the Sharp the set to look at, but I personally at 32" wouldn't be concerned with this and if the Sony was a cloud free set, might jump on the xbr2- the pq on those sets are very nice when there is no flaw. This is why i think you just should buy what you really want with a good return policy, test it, and see what happens. Good luck with this.

thanks i appreciate the reply. did you hear about color temperatue problems at all with the smaller set? i did a search and couldnt find any info.

the clouding is bothersome but i hope that by now theyd have those issues fixed, but color temperature issues on the 62u bothers me. many have complained about the gp1u having color temperature issues and things being way overly saturated, even after tweaking many settings. i dont see how these sets are any different aside from the game mode and inputs, so that worries me.

even though the xbr2 is only 720 resolution it really seems like the safer route for a more solid all around tv, but i desire that 1080p and 10,000:1 contrast. if ANYONE has these sets or has seen them in action please chime in!
I know theres a ton of people on here with experience on these units please guys!!
I'm having the exact same dilemma as you TC. After hours of researching I'm leaning just a little bit to the sharp because of the 1080P, 2 more HDMI inputs, 1080P compatible though components which is a big bonus and 6ms response time also the set is cheaper and 5" bigger!

It makes it hard to choose because I have a 32" Sony Bravia S series and the PQ for SD picture is still good. From what I've read the Sharp has poor SD quality picture, so I can bet the XBR2 will have very good PQ.

I'll be using it mainly for xbox 360, SD watching, and DVD watching for now till there is a proven winner over Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD.

have you checked out the set in person? I saw the d62u yesterday and it was just way too hard to tell the quality of the pictture with the horrid feed going through all the sets in the store.

When looking in many stores though, for some reason the xbr2 always looks really bad, i know its cuz of the messed up settings, i just want to see these sets hooked up to a ps3.
You really won't see any different between 720p and 1080p on a smaller set like the Sharp. 1080p really shines when the TV is above 45" so I really wouldn't be too worried about 1080p. The XBR2 are known for having great PQ, but as you mention Sharp has a higher contrast ratio which is equally important.

you dont think so? Ill be sitting within 3-4 feet of it to play games.

I also really dont like playing Bluray movies in 1080 interlaced, would rather have 720p or 1080p.

How much better is the xbr2 than the s2010? I might just go with a 26" if i cant settle on a 32". The ps3 looks so damn good on the 23" screen they use on ps3 displays. I wonder if theyll let me just hooked up my own ps3 to the tv's in store.
