I have a first generation XBOX 360 that I bought the first day that the XBOX 360 was sold. The unit is still going strong but is very noisy. The fan is much loader than anything else that I own and is the noise is disturbing. For contrast I also have an original PS3 (60GB) and it is very quiet.


How can I mod this thing to make it quieter. I wish they had an exchange program as I would like a 360 with an HDMI connection as well. The fan seems to be the biggest culprit. I have been using the player to stream NETFLIX movies and the loudness can be heard while the movie is playing. I know there is a company that sells lighted replacement fans but I do not want a lighted fan. The disc drive is also loud but the fan is my main concern. Any advise or a good link would be appreciated. Thanks.

I solved the issue by moving the 360 into a different room and just running the cables through the wall to the TV/Receiver.


I have a newer 360 and the disc drive is still so loud it is ridiculous. I can't even fathom how I put up with the 360 in the same room for so long before I moved it.


sure this solution can't be applied for everyone, but if you even have the chance....do it.

Since you are past your 3 year warranty you can go ahead and crack the case to do some cooling mods without fear now. Browse through here to find lots of options.

Some have suggested (and they did work for me) that putting rubber feet on the bottom helps.

If you have a Xbox 360 HDD, you can rip your games to the HDD legally so it won't be as loud when you play, you need the game in the drive for the initial loading check.


Do this from the new Xbox Dashboard. It make it quieter.

Replace the fans (you probably have Delta's). Its the only thing you can do with them.

I have no experience with the 3rd party 'Whisper' fans, but if you can buy a set of Nidec's they will serve you well.

I have searched for the Nidec fans with no luck. Does anyone have a source for a reasonable price.

the nidec fans are crap... if you're gonna swap yours get the talismoon fans.

you ever change out your fans? lol... not much else you can do.


2 things are making noise inside of any xbox, the DVD drive (which is fixed by HDD install) and the fans.


swap the fans.

I am willing to swap out the fans but I need to know which ones and where to purchase them.

I did the nidec swap for my old 360s fans that were driving me crazy. The nidec fans made the same amount of noise... just in a different pitch. It was definatly not worth the time, money, or risk (voids your warrenty)


I ended up selling the system and getting a new one (Jasper), which is much quieter (still doesn't compare to ps3 or wii though)

best answer and cheapest. Monoprice, grab some long component cables for like 15 bucks. You'll never hear the thing again. I did this ages ago. Gets the clutter out of the way too.

I put my unit on a set of four grommets I picked up at Ace Hardware and it really helps.
