AE700 Questions

2812 Views 34 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  rockslide
I tried searching through the existing monster threads (whoops, I hope Monster Cable doesn't sue me for using that terminology) and gave up after an hour.

If anyone could answer these questions, I'd greatly appreciate it:

1. Does the HDMI input do 1:1 pixel mapping on a computer input? I know it crops the picture, but is the picture that comes through 1:1 mapped?

2. Is there a correlation between serial numbers and the 1.07 version firmware? If so, at what serial number does the new firmware start?

Using HDMI crops the picture ===> NOT 1:1 mapping. If it does't crop, then you'd get perfect mapping.

Why don't you use VGA? It maps 1:1.
I can live with the cropping. What I wouldn't be able to accept is if the HDMI input is doing other processing on the input signal.

The Sony HS50 as this double whammy. It not only crops HDMI inputs, but it does some sort of processing which renders text to be less sharp than through the VGA input. It is an obvious difference.

If the Panasonic at least renders text as sharp as it does on the VGA input, I'd be very tempted to pull the trigger on it. I can get it for about $1200 Canadian less than the Sony.

I'm attaching a zipped file containing test patterns that I got from the HS50 official thread. The one to try out is a desktop pattern of alternating black and white pixels, 1280x720. On the VGA input of the HS50, it looked as it should. On the HDMI input, not only was there cropping, but the entire desktop came out as grey instead of black and white pixels.

If someone could try this on their AE700 and report back, I'd appreciate it.

Look at this picture(gallery button and HDMI signal picture) I took and you will see it is perfectly as sharp as vga-acually sharper and the picture is stunning. Also using my methods, the cropping is almost nonexistent.....:)
where did you get that thx wallapaper? and is it native resolution 1280x720?

From the pictures, it seems the cropping is not a big deal. Is this the amount of cropping right out of the box on HDMI, or did you change some settings to minimize the cropping?

I'm glad to hear that computer text is sharp on HDMI. That brings me a step closer to a purchase. It was a totally different story on the Sony HS50.

My only hesitation at this point is the 1 year warranty. If I purchase it on my VISA, I'll get an extra year. I'm still nervous though with that little amount of warranty coverage.

It sounds like you got the answers you needed for #1, but I'd like to throw in 2 cents on both.

1. Panasonic is working on a fix to the cropping issue. From what I am to understand, it was 3rd on their list after the screen trigger and vertical banding adjustments. We should see an update in another couple of weeks.

2. I am actually meeting with some people from Panasonic Japan this afternoon and this question is on my plate. From everything I am reading, no, there is no official serial number cut off. If I can get one today, I will update.

vincanity ? i am a happy owner of the panasonic and am wondering why you are so concerned about having a super sharp picture. are you planning on viewing a ,ot of text ?

the reason i ask is that my first impression after hooking my panasonic up via my computer using rgb was that the picture was hyper sharp. i found it distracting on some dvds. after selcting the cinema 2 option i found the picture much more filmlike and pleasing .i use other options depending on if im viewing sports, movies etc with direct tv.
Wallpaper is stretched 1280x1024. I use rage 3d and a monitor driver from a 23" lcd screen from Sony. It is easy to find and install.

My viewing preference is for a sharp picture. Coming from an Epson Cinema 500, my next projector should, at the very least, be a sideways step. I'd obviously prefer a step forward, but I don't want to take a step backwards.

The Epson was razor sharp on HDMI and I could see the complete 1280x720 desktop.

Please ask Panasonic to have procedures for owners to update their own firmware (if this is possible). Also, please ask them what the Level settings (2 of them) in the service menu are and what they do.

Thanks

They do not want customers in the service menu ... they said it was "very unfortunate" that getting into this menu was released to the public. Thus, they won't address any questions regarding it.

As far as end users upgrading the firmware, no, they have no plans on allowing this to be done on the fly. For a number of reasons but mostly due to lack of control if they ever released the code.

As far as the firmware updates themselves and s/n cutoffs ... I am waiting to hear. They only had the 1.05 number for me (we were waiting for the HDMI issue mostsly).

that wized by me about a million miles an hour

i get the wallpaper thing, but was are you doing to help eliminate cropping? i do see a tiny bit less than i've been able to achieve, but it's possible it's just the picture. can you explain in detail what you've done?

also, if ericbres is correct and it's on the list, i'm very happy and that fix would warrant me giving mine up for a week or so
The rage 3d tweak can be found by google. Once intalled, it will allow you to select the 1280x720 directly. Then go to the Sony website and in their downloads(support) section, there is a driver for a 23" 1920x1080 monitor they sell as a pc monitor. Download the driver and then go and install it as your monitor driver. Once installed, restart. You should be able to pick whatever res you want and it will look pretty good without much cropping.
huh, okay, i'll give the sony driver a shot

i don't think i need the rage3d tweak though because my nvidia ti4600 lists 1280x720, maybe i will after i install the sony driver, but i'll give it a shot. thanks for the tip z
yeah that is primarily for ati cards, although it helped with the cropping for me.
nvidia cards work w/o all this tweaking correct? I was just able to specify any custom resolution on my AE100 (856x480)... so much easier than using powerstrip/rage3d which I did once.
tell panasonic to get real. imagine if we couldnt get into our computers bios! i see no reason we cant do out own upgrades.

I looked on Sony's site and what I found that matches your 23" LCD screen is the SDM-P234. Is that what you have? I'm not sure how a monitor INF file can actually improve things once your resolution is set to 1280x720... I'll give it a shot tonight and let you know of my results.

I posted a message earlier on that suject of 1:1 mapping & HDMI. I am basically wondering if there is a way to achieve 1:1 mapping, cropping or not, over HDMI?

Colin.
I just tested HDMI and VGA (with my Radeon 9600 XT) using the 1280x720 pixel perfect test pattern as my desktop background.

With HDMI, at 1280x720 resolution, the pixel mapping is clearly 1:1. The image is absolutely not going through the scaling circuitry. The pixels are perfect & clear without any distortion. There is indeed some cropping, 6 pixels at the bottom and 8 pixels at the top.

With VGA I tried both 1280x720 and 1280x960 with VSCROLL. Both modes produced 1:1 mapping, no cropping. For the image quality for desktop items, text, etc, (did not try any video) HDMI was a lot better. The icons and the text were more crisp and by a good margin. Note that this is my first VGA test and, while all pixels in the pixel perfect pattern where well defined there was a noisy vertical dark gray bar at every 15 pixels. This was not scaling distortion and I'm wondering if that could be caused by a bad cable? (I brought the M-M cable from work just to do the test).
