AE900 and Toshiba 40H80

I want to get the AE900 for my living room to replace my Toshiba rear projection 40H80. My concern is that the AE900 may not be bright enough in the living room. We were at Stereo Exchange in NYC and the sales person told my wife that we'd need a $20K setup for it to equal the brightness of a rear projection TV. That of course has gotten my wife all worried and now she doesn't want to get the AE900. Is the sales person exaggerating?

My living room has lots of ambient light, with white ceilings. I can cover the window with curtains, but would prefer not to if I don't need it. The seating area is setup from 10 to 14ft away from the potential area of the screen (Da Lite Matte or HC).

I need some advice if I should go ahead with the purchase of the AE900?

At the same screen size the AE900 would be brighter than the 40H80, but still wouldn't be as good in ambient light. Rear projection screens are really high gain and have ambient light absorbing black stripes that give them great contrast in the presence of ambient light. A white front projection screen's contrast washes out easily in ambient light. For ambient light with front projection you'll need an expensive black screen.

In the dark brightness will be no problem. Large screen sizes won't be as bright as a 40" RPTV, but even the theater is nowhere near as bright as a RPTV at the screen sizes they use. Eyes have the ability to adjust to different brightness levels. The AE900 is plenty bright for home theater, but it will not give you near RPTV like equal results with daylight pouring through the shades.
