I have a DIGI PAD sound card that has an AES/EBU output and my pre/pro has an AES/EBU input.

Is there any reason I can't use this connection to pass digital 5.1 sound to my pre/pro to be decoded? It appears to be only 2 channel, but so is SPDIF.

Are there benefits to using this connection over coax or optical SPDIF?

Thanks!

There is no reason not to use, it should work fine. If the source is 5.1 then it should work.

In a pro environment AES/EBU is used because of long cable runs (i.e. 50, 100 200 ft), it is a balanced system so it has common mode rejection (many have switched to using coax cable with BNC connectors).

For home use I use only Toslink (optical) S/PDIF. Cheap, works well, and can not cause ground loops!!
