Apo,

The cheapest good three chipper that I know of is the new $30K Panasonic 7600U which is SXGA. You can then use an anamorphic lens on it and stretch the 1280X1024 pixels into a 16:9 shape.

I consider the image quality of the projector with the super contrast lens option to be quite good.

Rumor has it that there will be another three chip DLP designed for HT announced at CEDIA this year for less than $30K.

Someone with access to and skills in using a good machine shop could probably fabricate a cradle in which to precisely mount three inexpensive (read that XGA) DPL projectors, use a three-way signal splitter, and modify the projectors' color wheel so that they are are individually projecting a color like a CRT does.

If simple blanking is used on two of the three color segments of each color wheel then the signal-filtering need (i.e. filtering the G and B from the RGB data-stream on the first projector, B and R from the second, and R and G on the third) can be eliminated.

Of course, leaving the projectors outputting at nominal (factory spec) light output would generate a good amount of heat, but this would could be weighed against not blanking two of the three projectors, but only one. Would this help? Who knows.

The 7600 has a little brother (7500) that is about 5 grand cheaper, XGA reolution, and about 1/3 less lumens. All other features, specs are pretty close to the same. Same lenses etc.

You can probably get this one for $20K or less.

DLP Fan for life. Sorry, I was at CES and it looked awesome. I work in the industry and the company I work for sells, DLP, DILA, LCD. We just installed our first 3-CHIP DLP projector from DIGITAL PROJECTION. Simply stunning. We would like to sell and install more 3-chip units. However, the price point of $70,000 grand is steep for most people.

This is the reason I started this thread. Anyone have a link to the NEC model posted above?

You can get this PJ for under $20K. It is an XGA 3 chip. To get the 1000:1 contrast (on : off), you must use it in the high contrast mode with the special high contrast lenses (iris built in). It has a lot less than the 5000 rated lumens once you do all that and calibrate it though. Probably on the order of 3000. It is available now. Also, it is dual lamp, which you can run with both or one, so if 1500 lumens is enough, double the bulb life. You can also run each lamp in an eco mode, and further extend that.

As I said, can't really comment on image quality with film sources as my demo didn't include that. Look to Mr. Wiggggles' comments in that area. The 7600 was, however, not particularly loud running at 6000 lumens compared to the Christie leafblowers we were comparing it to. It was definitely audible, but quieter than my PC and harddrivve running.

Man, it sounds like Sony could absolutely render the 3-chip DLP market moot with the LCOS if they want.

$20K for something that has no better raw specs than 3 one chippers of abour $3K each... It would seriously be intriguing to try to repurpose the triple set... Tons of light output, no rainbows, tiny cost...

I know this has been discussed before, but it escapes me why TI won't let someone build a $10K 3-chipper.

TI has said on many many occasions that they would like to see DLP projectors at lower prices. With the current end prices they simply aren't selling enough DLP devices to make any money.

How could anyone make a $10k 3 chipper when decent 1 chip DLPs list for $10k to 15k. The HT demand for a 3 chip DLP PJ with less resolution than the current HD2s would be about ZERO IMO.

With the number of competitors in the market it must simply be that these buggers cost more than anyone can afford if they want to make a profit selling the pjs at lower prices. Competition is the only means we have to keep folks honest. In the DLP arena it seems to me we have enough.

Or perhaps they're all selling as many as they can make at the current prices.
