Airline Home Theater Idea

I have this really cool idea for a home theater. I'm a licensed Private Pilot working on all my further ratings and certificates so I can become a flight instructor to build my flight hours necessary to become hired as an airline or corporate pilot (big run-on sentence, I know :D ). With that known, you can imagine why I want to do this. This will be the future plan when I purchase a house with a basement...

So, I want to make a home theater look like the interior of an airline jet. I could somehow obtain scrap airline parts from various companies throughout the US. You can get pieces of airliner interior walls, airline seats, etc. from any of these companies, of course at a price. eBay has a large assortment of used airline seats, including some First Class seats.

I think it'd be so cool to build a home theater with the airline plastic walls with cheap LCD monitors directly behind each window, with a video showing clouds go by on a continuous loop (this would be easy to implement). Upon the start of the movie, the LCD's would show stars and city lights down below. In the beginning of a theater viewing, I'd play the sound of an idling jet engine...until the movie starts. :D First class seats (which are VERY comfy) could adorn two or three rows of the theater... then "coach class" could be one row in the rear.

I would imagine I'd have to work with the plastic airline walls because of the sound acoustic issue of the plastic. Another idea would be to make my own walls out of wood, but this would be very difficult as airline seats have all sorts of curves and designs not easily fabricated out of wood.

Has anyone seen or heard of a home theater like this? What do you think of this idea?

Sounds like a awesome idea!! Can't say that I have seen anyone do that, but there are lots of rooms out there. Very original if you ask me...
Well...that's cool and all but who really wants to watch those tiny TVs with shaky images and bad color at home? The headphones really stink too...

:)

Sounds like a pretty fun idea! I expect Dennis and Mark Ye (both are pilots) will be chiming in soon...

Darren
Someone did do that very concept. I read it a/v interiors a few years back. Some ex-747 pilot basically bought overhead cabin throwaways, windows, and even old first class seats and configured his HT to look like the front section of 747.

Used a crt projector, I believe. Very cool but I don't know how you could see the screen clearly from the 2nd or third row since he didn't put in risers.

Victor
You have to do this! That would be awesome. But on a couple of the lcd monitors you have to have the wings visible. Then you could edit some scenes in from that Hitchcock movie that has the guy on the wing hah. That would be great!

When you get done invite me over!

Thanks for the replies everyone. It'll be a "low budget" home theater, meaning $5000 max. Everything would be DIY. I already have the necessary basic audio/video components in my current home theater set up (see link below in my signature). I do have a CRT projector, but by then I'll probably end up upgrading to a G90 :D

And of course I'd invite everyone over :)

LOL :) Well, I think my current Sony 1251 would have to suffice... with hopes of obtaining a G90, as I mentioned above.

hey I can relate, I have over a million miles on United alone.

Plastic tumblers

Bags of peanuts

Square napkins

Air sick bags

minature booze

those blankets and pretend pillows

Get a couple of those metal service carts

Build a metal galley

rope light on the floor

get a "fasten your seat belts" light and back light it during the movie

can you get one of those electronic bell sounds that was always ringing

I would definitely do that! I can easily rig up a circuit to play this chime with the push of a button :)

You could install a Buttkicker, and hook it to its own amp seperate from the main one. Then you could drive it with a signal that would make it feel like the kid behind you was kicking your seat through the whole movie.

Should I add annoying baby crying sounds too? :D
Great Idea...My theater is similar- The Flyin. Although my interior will not be as the inside of a plane , the outside entrance however, will be a B-25 fuselage. I am a former Air-Force guy and can't seem to get away from planes. I am a third generation AF brat and we have flown everything from Curtis Jenny's to F-16's. So you can imagine I like your idea.

I was going to get a real B-25 fuselage from the bone yard in AZ, but the cost was just to high. Then I thought about going to the Planes of Fame museum and getting some spare parts as my Brother is one of the pilots there. But they need all the parts for spares so I am just going to prefab my own fuselage.

Drew
Jace, that's the sound!

Now all you need is a scratchy voice that says "this is the captain speaking, in a few minutes we will begin tonites feature. During the movie we will be flying at 35,000 feet. The weather center has informed us a developing disburbance over Iowa that may cause some in flight turbulance. For that reason I'm turning on the fasten seat belt sign and expect it to be on for the next hour."

Of course you need some other announcements when you hit the buttkicker button to fake some turbulance and a final it's been our pleasure at the end. Have fun.

Very interesting plans you got there - I wish I had a basement like that. Game room with pool table and foosball, workout room, bar, and theater - what more could you ask for?

I've always wanted to fly the Curtis Jenny - flying in an open air cockpit sportin' aviator goggles has always been a dream of mine. Right now I have to resort to Piper Warriors, Arrows, and Cessna 172's! ;)

It wasn't easy but its from A/V interiors back in March 2001. I have to correct myself, he does have risers- and some serious gear to boot!

Owner lives somewhere in San Jose and used Integrated system Design of Sacramento to help create this theater. He used 14 1st class seats, overhead panels and bins, window panels and an sky mural on the other side. 110" screen, fiber optic ceiling, the works!

Anyway, forgive the crappy shots. My scanner's busted so I used my digital camera + photoshop to try to save the pictures :D

Seats and interior panels (such as those used in the pictures above) are generally available for purchase from the airlines when they refurbish an airplane. The downside is, only employees know when these "opportunities" come up.
Hi HT People:

Here's a different but related thought. I have been thinking about this for years, even though I won't likely do this in my theater, not my first iteration at least.

How about "The Odyssey Theater" for those of you who liked 2001: A Space Odyssey" and it would look great if someome did the command module. It would be a little tough to have 3 big space pods at the front of the room, but you could at least hang 3 different coloured space suits at the back. Or you could maybe do part of the centrifuge. Possibly even do one of the shuttle craft that carried Dr. Heywood Floyd to the moon (the TWA "Orion" ??).

This isn't such a wacky idea, given that someone did the Milenium Falcon, and did a very good job of it too. Or the "Bridge" theater, made to look like the Enterprise bridge. That was a terrific idea.

If I had the budget, which I don't, I'd do "The Odyssey."

Now, back onto the airliner theater, it was neat to see the example, and there's no end to how you could decorate it, given that all aircraft have similarities, but are also quite different. Fly on a few foriegn carriers, and you'll see. Get a few windows, tray tables (in their upright, locked position) and you could make a galley kitchen for those steamed lunches (yummy!). Have a washroom with the blue water, lots of "NO Smoking" and seat belt signs that light up, and an emergency door. And yes, the overhead bins and barf bags would be needed to make it look real.

Go for it and show us when you're done.

Cheers, Tom.

And if you wanted to make it really authentic you would have random interuptions by the captain with a flight update. "Sorry for the interuptions but if you look out the left side of the aircraft..."

Then to top it off you would cut off the last 10 minutes of the movie becuase you were landing. :)
