Hello,

I've scanned the threads here for the akai posts that complain about the same tv model I have. While I purchased this refurb set about a year and a half ago online, the site has gone out of business and I neglected to purchase a warranty which I thought I did (that will never happen again.)

Now to my problem: Well I woke up this morning and went to turn on the tv to check news/weather. I had watched tv last night without a problem and turned everything off and went to bed.

As the tv turned on to the Blue Akai Screen I noticed the blue was sdepeer than usual and the white was brighter. As the screen changed to my DVR list I noticed a major problem. All the colors were skewed, greys were purple, dark blue was light blue and the whole thing was unwatchable. I turned every component on/off 3 times before deciding this wasn't a fluke. I unplugged my hdmi connections into the tv and it didn't help. The only other input I use is component and that was all messed up to with my 360 image on it all grainy with incorrect colors, I wouldn't say flashing but the colors are all screwed up.

I tried leaving the power unplugged and that didn't help either. I don't want to buy a new tv yet as it's still only 1 1/2 yrs old and until today it worked perfectly. Here's a picture I took before leaving of my dvr screen. If anyone has cablevision or a sci atlanta 8300HDthen you should notice the problem in colors. I'm not sure if this is a backlight issue or what but I do have electronic repair experience and soldering experience. Anyone have anyideas on the problem or any good diagnostic tips to check when I get home from work? I'll bring it to a repair shop if necessary but if I could order the parts and fix it at home it would be much easier.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be appreciated.

After speaking with two repair companies I've had estimates form one place of 300-500 and another place gave a labor min of 100 and a max of 225. The estimate from the more expensive place did say it sounded like either the two backlight inverters or the upper and lower buffers.

The inverters I saw online for 60 each, if I could fix this myself for 120 it would be great. The buffers I don't know what it is. I don't know if this could be related to the capacitor fix I've seen referenced here but if anyone on here has an idea from what I've described and the picture posted please let me know. I'd love to repair this tv myself and be able to enjoy this set some more. When I get home I'll try letting it warm up and try SD and HD channels, the type of channel didn't seem to matter this morning though when I first noticed this color problem.

After reading the number of posts of people with color issues and lines being caused by the capaciors I think that may be the issue. Most people say they have white lines and boxes, where as I have inverted colors and lines around movement I think. They sound similar but possibly not as drastic. What would a tv look like with bad backlight inverters? if I can rule that out it makes me lean even more towards doing the capacitor fix myself. I'd just like some input on what the problem seems to be from a more experienced TV Technician. I don't want to start working on capacitors to find out the main board is blown and it's quicker/easier to get a new set.

I'm starting to feel it would probably be better to try the capacitor fix first, than if that doesn't work and the backlight inverters seem to be the issue try to replace that. If all else fails and the repairs don't work I can still try and get it repaired or get a new tv.

Some better pictures of the problem.

I just purchased some 100uf 35v and 50v capacitors. I bought 3-50w 100uf radials, 2-35w 100uf radials, 1-50w 100uf axial capacitor.

I wasn't sure if there's a difference between them but I would use whatever type matched the current ones.
