Alarming Question in a HD-DVD Survey I Took

1992 Views 20 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  sillysam
I'm signed up on a site called e-rewards that gives you stuff for taking surveys. And I just finished a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray survey that had a rather interesting question in it. It asked me, "How would you feel if Toshiba started selling Blu-ray players?". It then followed up with "What could Toshiba do to maintain your loyalty if they stopped selling HD-DVDs?". Now at the start of the survey you were allowed to indicate whether you owned a stand alone HD-DVD, Blu-ray (the PS3 didn't count) or dual format player. I have a PS3 and HD-A1 so I had to choose stand alone HD-DVD player. But I'm curious to see if anyone else has taken this survey, and if there was a flip-side to the survey where they asked the same exact thing but for Blu-ray owners. Like "How would you feel if Sony started selling HD-DVD players?".

For all you know that was a paid survey from the BDA...
Haha, you're right. Yeah there's really no point in jumping to any conclusions just based on some survey. But I was just curious if they asked the same questions for the Blu-ray side.
wtsang, thanks for posting this information. You are correct this is an alarming question. Sometimes surveys are designed strictly to spread FUD. I am suspicious of this survey and its unusual questions.

I can tell you for sure Toshiba is not thinking about making any BD player, or dual format player. Toshiba is very deeply dedicated exclusively to the HD DVD format and they are doing an excellent job of gaining market share.

Toshiba is very keenly focused on one mission, to make HD DVD the best possible format of choice available and they have a well planned and executed multi-faceted plan to succeed.

Where exactly did you get this survey? What was the URL of the site?

Oh I know, I am seeing it unfold.

Besides I truly doubt that there was ever such a survey.

Forgive me, but I don't believe your post.

Please post the link to that survey so we can examine in for ourselves.
The only survey I know of is this one... http://www.appforce.net/phpESP2/publ...name=FormatWar

I just seen it in the blu-ray.com website...Beatboy77 started it there...the BD fanboys are having a blast with this one. Otherwise I haven't seen any other surveys.
Every company has contingency plans so it would hardly surprise me if Toshiba had a plan about Blu-ray; nor would it surprise me if Sony had a plan about HD DVD.

The formats are very similar and the differences have narrowed with chipsets that support both.

The survey could of course have been paid for by just about any company involved in the process.

One of these two formats is going to win, they are too similar and the consumer hates the dissonance of having to choose. Once one wins, all companies will jump on board immediately and in a few years we will forget that there was ever a format war at all.
Hah, it's cool you don't need to believe my post, but honestly, even if you believed it, it doesn't mean that much it's just a survey question. I was just guessing that it was a standard question set that was probably asked on the Blu-ray side of the survey also and wanted to see if anyone had info if I was right.

The survey, like I had written earlier, is from a site called e-rewards.com. They send you surveys based on your profile of what you fill out you're interested in. You can try and sign up and make sure you put that you own a HD-DVD player and maybe you'll get chosen for the survey also.

Surveys that ask hypothetical questions are bogus. See my signature.

One time I signed up to try to get something free. I got TONS of spam that took me a good while (couple of weeks) to unsubscribe from all those lists.

Why on earth would you doubt there was such a survey question. Any number of folks could have a reason for commissioning a survey with that question in it.

I recieve regular surveys from e-rewards, havent seen that one yet, but if I do, I'll post here.

E-rewards actually contracts with folks to conduct surveys as well as various rewards programs offered by retailers.

You may be right, but it may take years. In the video tape days I owned both a VHS and a Bata machine - I wasn't a videophile at the time. I just wanted to rent what I wanted when I wanted. Both machine cost way more in 1980 dollars than the present HD DVD and soon to be (maybe) lower priced BD players. If these players continue to become very inexpensive (ie. $129 HD DVD player and a $179 BD player) then an awfull lot of people will buy both and noone is going to care about any "war". It just won't be relevant to them.

Cheers,

Grant

If it was someone with conflicting interests like the BDA, who cares?

If it was Toshiba, I would be quite happy to see a company do questionnaires to have a plan b.

Either way, Tosh either cares enough to do a what if scenario (in spite of the huge momentum upwards that HD DVD has been experiencing lately) to not disenfranchise its customer base, or its simply fud.

Regardless of who did it, its still just a questionnaire. I took a survey for Dhamler-Chrysler a while back, and it had what if questions like that.

One specific question was - if the pricing was 12% below middle tiers like ford or chevy, would you be inclined to consider Chrysler products?

I believe everyone answered yes and I still havent seen a 12% reduction, and its been a few years since.

And might I add Dahmler is trying to sell of Chrysler at huge losses(present day, was just up at cnn a week ago). So they definitely couldve done those what ifs asked, and they still didnt, even to save the merger.
The HD DVD promo group could start their own FUD survey as well

Would you buy a Sony HD DVD player?

What movies would you expect Disney to release first on HD DVD?

With the pathetic PS3 sales in April would you still consider it as a Blu-Ray player?

Well thats just the problem - then you get flagged as a deceptive company when found out.

I think tosh's truthful (even when it was painful months back) approach and mano y mano type competitor has been working well for them.

On top of that, we dont even know who did it. It could be Fun Yah or Funai for all we know.

Yes, that's something I'm very pleased with thus far. Toshiba has come across as a very straight shooter. The emphasis has been on the product and delivering the goods (even if it does take a few updates to close the gap). At no point have I felt them to be at all deceptive, but rather both a responsible and appropriately savvy competitor. Very impressive in both style and execution.
