My daughter gave me the "Alien - The Director's Cut (Collector's Edition)" DVD for Christmas. I have discovered to my chagrin that my Yamaha RX-V2400 receiver is unable to decode the DTS track, although the DD track plays perfectly.

When I choose the DTS track, the display on the 2400 flashes and no sound is produced. Further, the "DTS" logo on the sound setup page is grayed out. I have my receiver set up to play DTS with PLIIx added, but this has never caused a problem that I am aware of. I have many DVDs with DTS tracks and all of them but the "Alien" disk work perfectly. Can anyone suggest what is going on here?

KyPeN -- I'll try it on my daughter's system unless somebody has something specific to offer here. Anyway, yours is a good idea. Thanks.

Can you play other DTS titles on your system without issue?

If so, it's likely the disk.

Alien's DTS track wouldn't work on certain Denon players without a firmware upgrade, but your profile lists "Sony" for DVD.

bubbawilly -- I have never had a problem with any other DTS title. I needed to update my profile, which had a couple of errors. I have now done so. Thanks for the heads up. I replaced my old (very old!) Sony DVD player with a Momitsu V880 several months ago.

I use an optical audio connection from the DVD player to the receiver. Do you know what part the player's firmware plays in that operation?

I'm not sure. I just know that Denon 2200/2900 models (maybe others) required several firmware updates in order to play a few of the popular disks at the time, Alien being one of them.

I never understood why these relatively new players (at that time) wouldn't play the disks in question, when even older players would.

I would exchange the disk and go from there. If that doesn't correct the problem, then perhaps some other V880 owners can chime in as to whether Alien posed a problem for them.

I should add that when I've had a bum disk (audio-wise), it's always been DTS.

Bubbawilly is correct...

Certain DVD media sometimes will not play reliably on certain DVD players, or the AVR is blamed when in fact...

The media and its mastering process are at fault...

Try the disk on another DTS system and advised back if it plays back properly..

bubbawilly -- Thanks for the advice. I am too lazy to try to get BB to replace the disk and too cheap to buy a new one. Thus, I guess when I watch "Alien" I will continue to use DD + PLIIx, which sounds pretty good anyway.

I will try to post a query about this problem to the DVD Players Forum, too.
