I was a little surprised there wasn't already a thread on this film. Watched the Blu-ray last night and was quite impressed with Redford's performance - a one-man show with less than 20 words of dialogue I would guess.


Nominated for 2 Golden Globes - Best Actor and Best Original soundtrack. Alex Ebert won for his original soundtrack, first time out, although his music has been in a few other films. The soundtrack like the film is very minimalist. Winner of a Golden Globe but passed over entirely for an Academy Award nomination? Interesting...


Similarly could a role which is all physical acting with a minimum of dialogue be nominated for an Oscar? I guess not. The sole Oscar nomination is for sound editing, which is well deserved, the DTS-MA soundfield on the Blu-ray was well executed and contributed greatly to the movie especially during the storm sequence.


This film has much in common with Gravity, one person's attempt to survive in a hostile environment, but there are other similarities.


It's a shame that Redford was not recognized for his tour de force performance, at least with an Oscar nomination. Recommended. 9/10.

Yeah, that was ridiculous, from everything I've heard about his performance. Very much looking forward to this one.

Castaway, Hell in the Pacific, and now All is Lost rounding out the top 3 movies with fewest words per minute in a film that I can recall seeing.


I liked it thoroughly. It is a simple story, simply shot. You certainly feel yourself there with him as he struggles to survive and the comparison to Gravity is appropriate although I think this movie is far easier to feel immersed in as most of us have taken a ride on the water.

It's certainly worth the watch and the ending was perfect in my opinion (and more believable than Gravity - no hate mail please).

I watched this on cable a couple of days ago, and was pretty pleased with it. To be honest with the lack of dialogue I was expecting to be skipping forward here and there on this one, and was quite surprised that it held my attention and seemed to go by quickly. Worth watching, IMHO.
