The game was reviewed already in Europe and not too favorably at that. Apparently there are some major problems with the controls as well as a poorly designed checkpoint/save system.

It sounds like this is turning into a rental for me. Hopefully we'll see some US reviews soon.
I seen a few people with the game already talking about how the control scheme is awful.
Well if this game doesnt do it, there goes Atari.. this is the game that they're betting the farm on.
I don't understand how game after game after game comes out with horrible control schemes or save/checkpoint or inventory management systems. Geez...they've only had what...35 years of gaming to fall back on for reference? Ok, maybe 15 years with controllers with more than one or two buttons and whatnot, but still....you'd think they'd have enough experience by now to be able to design a decent control scheme. Besides, it's Atari, right? Geez, if any company should have enough experience to recognize good from bad...

But whatever...I'll withhold judgement in AOTD's case until some more info comes out. Besides, I'm old enough to remember the first AOTD, and it has fond memories for me.
I'm heavily debating between the Wii or 360 version of this one. The Wii controls look rad as hell, and seem to have some RE4 style of direct aiming. As RE4 showed us, direct aiming in 3rd person is so much easier with the Wiimote than with standard analog thumb sticks. The 360 will of course be prettier.

These guys made my favorite racer ever (Test Drive Unlimited) and I really hope that the Eurogamer review was a fluke.

Here's a review. 64/100 not very good. Basically they say the game is unfinished(ex. when picking up item the "A" indicator shows up, you press it but it won't pick up item. You then have to go to a different angle and press "A" again). Also, the driving controls are bad and not fun.

This is for the wii version btw.

CRAP! I was sooo looking forward to this. Hmmm, I might take a risk and pick it up anyway.

Hmmm...that sounds like crap. I wonder if the 360 and PS3 versions suffer from the same problems as the Wii version, since it sounds like most of the complaints are with the controls, which could be entirely different on a controller vs. the wiimote.
Reviews, ala Metacritic:

80 - Official Xbox Magazine UK

A third-person action-adventure with the beating black heart of a survival horror, Alone in the Dark is a game that needs to be experienced by everybody. Its novel approach of applying shocks into an episodic structure, eight hourly segments in all, is a masterstroke.

73 - Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

As much as Alone In The Dark deserves to be criticised for its problems, it equally deserves to be lavished with praise for some outstanding ideas and set-pieces. A gracious failure, AITD should stand as a lesson for other developers to see what they should be striving for.

70 - EuroGamer

You want to love it, but it just keeps letting you down, and in the end that's the impression that sticks to the wall and stays there.

70 - IGN UK

Sure, its plot is hugely contrived, it's occasionally frustrating and really lacking in the kind of polish we expect from big-name games in this day and age. However, it's also undoubtedly one of the most imaginative, ambitious and exciting titles to hit a console in the last few years.

60 - X360 Magazine UK

We so wanted to like this game but it kept slapping us in the face with bad controls, repetitive puzzles and the annoying inventory.

50 - Gamer.nl

The game can be compared to an agressive puppy without potty-training. You want to keep him so badly, but everytime it seems to go right, it bites, scratches and sh.ts on your carpet.

IGN did a UK review on this game and gave it a 70. I think that's the same score assassin's creed got, and a lot of people enjoyed assassin's creed.
Wow, those reviews don't do much to make up my mind on whether to get this or not. Sounds like a great game with major problems.

hmmm...I guess I'll wait for some reviews from gamers.
AITD just moved into the rental category for me. I had such high hopes for this one.
Totally sucks, I was really looking foward to this one. I need a good horror game thats not silent hill. When does alan wake come out again?
Reading about Atari suing websites that posted bad reviews of AitD before the release date remove them doesn't exactly endear them to me either:

They are claiming that the bad reviews are based on unfinished versions of the game. It would be nice if that was true.
Its not, we all know that "unfinished" is almost identical to the experience of a full version. Take game demos for example ha ha.
IGN's review is up . Boring levels, boring combat, bad controls, lousy level design, horrible dialogue (lots of swearing though for you cool 12 year olds out there...because we all know swearing every other word is how you make a game "mature").

3.5.

Guess I can knock that off my "buy" and "rental" list.
