Hi all,

What do you think would be a good alternative to the Proceed AVP upgrade for someone who already own an AVP? I see that a lot of you had already jumped ship to Lexicon MC-12, but $7K is a little steep for me. Even with trade in, I need to pay over $5K to get the MC-12. I WISH I have that money and would switch too :(

So what else is out there for us?

Figure we can get $1500-$2000 for the AVP on the used market plus $2500 for the upgrade ( without 6 ch passthrough ), so we are looking at units that is around $4K, either new or used.

The candidate should have the latest processing modes (EX, and PLII), 24/192K Dacs, and 2 ch analog bypass mode. 7.1 pass through should be optional as in AVP2 so that we can make a fair comparison.

How about Integra RDC7, Sunfire Theater Grand III, Bryston SP-1.7, Anthem AVM20 ?

I posted in the other thread...I compared the RDC7 to the MC12B with my speakers (B&WN802s) and found the Lex piece too bright for my tastes. I bought the Integra and am thrilled. The BIG price difference helped pay for other toys too!

FYI: I have a pdf blurb on the 1.7 and it says: "DACs can run up to 192kHz sample rates for future upgrades"

I suspect (although this is a guess) that the DACs they used can be 4x oversampled at 96KHz and 2 x oversampled at 192 KHz (i.e., their max rate is 384KHz). An email to Bryston will probably clarify this (they are responsive).

How much did you pay for the Integra?

I can get an MC12B for 5K + AVP trade-in. I wonder what my net cost would be on the Integra, assuming I can get about $1500 for a used AVP.

I'll have to get over to Stereo Exchange for a listen.

This from Bryston's website -- the upgrade from the SP1 to the 1.7 includes:

* 5.1 analog bypass input

* 7.1 channel RCA outputs for EX and ES modes

* 96kHz digital input sample rates

* DTS NEO 6 Matrix decoding

* DTS ES 6.1 decoding

* THX Surround EX decoding

* Dolby Pro Logic II decoding

* Additional 2-channel music and surround modes

"It is quite an extensive upgrade and involves the replacement of the Faceplate, the Rear Panel and the Digital Circuit Board."

This upgrade costs $1000. It includes a true 5.1 analog bypass and faceplate -- these two alone are $1400 from Proceed. I don't know if the Bryston 5.1 input has the option of bass management.

To be fair, the AVPII upgrade gets you new DAC's, but those are another $2500.

rblnr, after you listen to the Integra please post your impression on the unit, especially as compared to the AVP. I think a lot of people will be very interested in this unit if the sound quality is up to par. I saw in several posts that the customer service is pretty good too.

Average street price of the RDC-7 would be about $3.5-3.6K, slightly lower than the AVP+upgrade cost. So financially, this is a viable option for those of us who wants to get away from Proceed.

I was considering the AVP (or AVP2) but decided to buy the Anthem AVM 20 instead. I compared the sound of the Anthem with the AVP for 2 channel music, with a Proceed HPA amp and Revel Studio speakers. The Anthem unit sounds fabulous, virtually as good as the Proceed -- in a blind comparison I don't think I could tell the difference. Currently the AVM 20 does not have DPL2, but an upgrade should be available by the end of this month, or so I was told.

Here's a link to an excellent review of the Anthem unit:

Hope this helps,

The spec posted in Bryston web site stated that the new dacs in SP-1.7 are 24/96 DACs. These can still sound good if implemented correctly. What matters is how it sounds at the end.

Anyone have listen to the SP-1.7 yet?

Read it carefully. They're 192 running at 96. Haven't heard it yet. They're just starting to come out.
