I purchased a Polaroid 2001G DVD Recorder about a nearly two months ago. During this time I've had a problem with the audio and it's been bugging me ever since.


When watching television, there is this high pitch noise. I tried tuning my amp to see if I can relieve this problem and it did help somewhat, but the problem is still there. Now I am thinking maybe it's the mono tuner this DVD recorder is equipped with.


I tried to let it go, but I hear it every single second I am watching TV and it's driving me insane! Feels like only dogs and me can this high pitch frequency. So now I am having a Monk moment, worried that this noise is probably damaging my hearing.


Burned a quick clip from the TV guide channel, extracted the audio to a wav file.

I also opened this wav with nero wav editor to check the frequency. Please tell me I am not crazy!



Is this a problem and if so am I damaging my hearing?

I am a doofus when it comes to this stuff.

It looks like there's a spike between 10 and 20. Check out the arrow in the picture.

It' s probably the 15.734KHz horizontal sweep that you're hearing.


Most people can't hear that high.

Since the vertical sweep is at 59.94 Hz, and this appears between 10 and 20 KHz...I'd suggest it's the horizontal sweep.

The fly-back transformer in your TV is going bad or is just noisier than usual. I had a computer monitor that drove my wife crazy...didn't bother me much (thanks to years of slamming 2Bs into Paiste cymbals....)

Don't worry about a thing, it bothers me when I hear the TV on but there is no signal being put through so all you hear is this loud ringing.


I can hear it from the kitchen on the other side of the house.... even when listening to music it bothers me to hear it from far away.

What is your TV?


Is this a standard definition 480i CRT display?


If so you're probably just hearing what Targus is talking about. It's a faith high-pitched buzz that you can hear whenever the TV is on. I hear that and it's annoying sometimes. No it's not damaging anything.

It's not the TV, I know that for a fact because when I turn on any other component it goes away! My sound comes from my home theater speakers, not my tv speakers.

That spike is at the 15.750 kHz horizontal retrace frequency. It won't hurt your hearing, though it could drive you buggy. And after the passage of enough years, you probably won't be able to hear it anymore. With age, we loss high frequencies no matter how protective we are to our hearing.

I can hear when my 'tube' television is still operating with no signal. The high frequency pitch can not be heard by many others. The high frequency noise will not harm your hearing, unless it is extremely loud. We humans can not hear a great deal of frequencies above about 15kHz and below about 30Hz.
