Hooked up OTA driven DTC-100 to G11's (no Dillard) Computer 2 input and voila! am getting HDTV. No messing required. Just press "computer" on the ILA remote to switch from HTPC and there it is! Looks terrific.


My problem(?) is that everything looks good, including the majority of commercials (supposedly not HDTV). Reading these forums, I get the idea that the HDTV programming is supposed to look dramatically better than the non-HDTV commercials. To me, in more cases than not, they both look great. Except for the AR, can't tell them apart!


Which leads me to wonder if I need to set something differently, that will enable the HDTV signals to look still better than they do already.


Anybody have a stock list of settings I should tune into?

The commercials have been upconverted to HDTV before being transmitted. They are scaled to the same rate as programming.

Leitch makes an upconverter for TV stations called Juno that costs somewhere around $60,000.


Done right, it can look very good. Done wrong, and well...

Thanks for the input. It's probably the answer in my situation.

The station I mostly watch is CBS out of Phila -- a big metro station. $60,000 for better looking commercials is no doubt a given to their management.

Carl,

You should see a HUGE difference between the HD show and the commercials. You're using a vga connector, so that part must be ok... Do you have 16:9 selected in the DTC and D-ila menus? You'll know when it's HD cause you'll jump out of your chair!

Carl, Like dcarl said, you should notice a major difference between HD progamming and non-HD.


First of all, HD shows will utilize the entire width of the screen - depending on how you have it set up. HD shows (whether shot initially on film, or using HD cameras) look incredible campared to regular 480i broadcasts.


If you can't see the difference, tune in a PBS station near you and look at some native HD camera work - you will start laughing (as milori initially said), because the picture is awesome.


Most evening shows broadcast in HD, such as those on CBS, were originally shot on film. Most of these shows still look great, but will never compare to original source HD camera work. You will be able to tell the difference on D-ILA without any thinking after you see them.

The utilizing the full screen doesn't cut it either when a Juno is involved because it can use an advanced stretching alogrithm that streches the outside borders more than the center because faces are often in the center.


How much this is used is totally up to the station and/or operator of the equipment.


Yes, HD does look much better, but the Juno makes good use of good quality material.
