Am I the only one indifferent about Left 4 Dead?

3074 Views 47 Replies 33 Participants Last post by  gonzolean
So at the urgance of one of my friends I picked up Left 4 Dead this weekend with my xmas monies.

I'm not a huge zombie lover, but I'm not a zombie hater. I've seen my 28 days, Day of the Dead etc and liked them.

I have to say I'm kind of underwhelmed. I see flashes of brilliance but other times I feel like "I paid 60 dollars for this?".

Am I the only one who feels this way? Or does the game grow on you?

I know what you mean. I rented it and thought it just ok. I think the appropriate price point probably should have been 40-50, but fair price has nothing to do with this business.

The value lays in the pretty addictive MP if you have a group of people who know how to play as a unit. Otherwise not for Lone Wolf types or MP indifferent folks.
Yeah, I think this game isn't for everybody, but for those that like it, they seem to REALLY like it.

It's kinda like you either "get it" or you don't.

I'm still waiting to play it (I swear Gamefly hates me) but I have played the demo and thought it was cool.

Hey 3:33 GF just sent me a copy of L4D after I bought it. I promise to return it the same day and hopefully you'll get it! LOL
One of my friends is the same way. He is mainly a Gears and Halo gamer and can't stand this game. He has only played it for maybe 20-30 mins total and has already passed judgement.

He seemed to be turned off by having to rely on your team so much. Considering the high concentration of a$$clowns he's used to playing with on Gears and Halo I guess I can see where he's coming from.

I'm so hooked on L4D versus. I am dying for the upcoming DLC.
Assclowns aren't the problem for me as the ppl I play with are great and we do good teamwork. I just feel kinda...like "is this it?"

Hey, thanks! lol
Single player, it's boring quick. The value lies in the multiplayer campaign (I didn't like versus much).
I could see why some wouldn't be too hot on this game, regardless, I love it. I have the most fun playing on expert with three other humans, it's an absolute blast.
as a game, i have really enjoyed it. what i can play of it, that is... what has kept me from fully enjoying it? i get motion sickness from it.

it's weird because i'm a total FPS veteran, play COD daily, but this ONE game makes me nauseated?! i have no idea why.

no... i love zombies but this game is utter garbage.

i'd rebuy @ $20 or less.
I'm loving it. It must be said that I like co-op more than just about anything, but I really like this game.

It's not like most games where once you go through a level, you've seen what there is to see, and it's time to move on, or maybe they've put in secret little hidden gems or packages to give you incentive to go through multiple times. The experience isn't as much about the level design as it is about the enemies' behavior.

With the so-called 'AI Director,' they are trying some groundbreaking stuff under the hood. It doesn't work perfectly, but it is a very different approach to the level design of fps games, even those other few that have co-op as a focus. I've found it very refreshing.

I've had nothing but completely engrossing fun every time I've played it (only on 'advanced' difficulty; 'normal' wasn't nearly as fun and doesn't seem to demonstrate the AI director too well). I will admit I've only played it with long-time XBL friends, and never with randoms, and that camaraderie is a big part of my enjoyment. But it seems every time we go through a movie, there is no end to the 'oh ****!' moments the game throws at us. I've rarely had as much pure, high adrenaline fun in a co-op game before.

It may not hit on all cylinders, and you could argue it should have been $50 or $40 at launch, but I applaud Valve for trying something so different in the fps genre, for building a game where 4p co-op is the essence, not an add-on, and doing it with such a playful sense of style and atmosphere to boot. This is the type of game the I think I could enjoy for a long time, specifically due to the fact that it's never the same thing twice. I look forward to an L4D2 or whatever comes next from Valve in this direction.

And don't get me started on full 8-man versus!

I have a ton of fun with it but I can see why people would be put off, especially with the $60 price tag. I don't question Valve on the pricing as this is the same team that gave us the Orange Box for $60 and that package was easily 3x that dollar amount in "value". I expect a lot of free DLC for this game (two extra campaigns, additional "special" infecteds that will be included in existing campaigns, etc).

But I agree, that this is the best online experience I have had with friends since Burnout 3: Takedown. In a group with randoms it's hit or miss, but with three close friends who will play as a team, it doesn't get much better.
I haven't really played it alot yet but I do like it so far, I should note that I bought it when Amazon had it on sale for 39.99. Like several others have said, I feel the content doesnt really justify a 60.00 price point
I had a blast for the first couple of weeks with this game, haven't touched it since. They need more campaigns and variety to hold my interest. I think the game really should've launched with atleast 6 or 8 campaigns to justify the $60 price.
I played the demo and lost the hype. Waves of zombies on five maps, it used to be a source mods too. It seems like it will be a flash in the pan, too little variety and too one dimensional. I love co-op games, but this seemed like it should be free for HL2.

If it had a fully fleshed out SP campaign then I might be more inclined to buy it, but it's like Gear2 horde mode, WaW zombie mode and R2 co-op without the SP game.
I do think the lack of content is the games biggest downfall, but playing over Live with a good team is still some of the most fun I've had this year. I hope Valve releases lots of free DLC for the 360, or even a map editor/creator would be nice.
Yeah wait until you finish it. It is only 2 hrs long. $60 for 2 hrs is nuts. This game should have been slammed in reviews. Yet it gets glowing reviews only because every one is on the valve bandwagon. If another company released this. It would be slammed into the ground and forgotten by now.

meh, they stole a large portion of it (as they do MANY games) from a (FREE) addon to any source game, zombie panic.... IMO zombie panic has its flaws, but is still a better game.... and its free with hl2, or css, or even tf2 (albeit pc only).

i have to agree... it doesnt even feel like a valve game... but the valve name is definitely the only thing keeping this afloat.

valve "isn't allowed to release free DLC" (even though other companies have, and continue to)

AKA

valve doesn't want to... even for TF2, they're bundling all the updates together (that are free on pc) and will probably charge 800-1200 ms points for them... a waste of time and effort on their part because nobody is gonna buy that crap.

luckily i have an HTPC and my 360 wireless controller works great for TF2, the game runs much smoother and in 1080p, but aside from that i can barely tell i'm not playing on 360, except i dont have the horrible lag i had on 360, and my HTPC is much quieter than my 360.

it's been one of my favorite games- multi is much more fun than the single player, but the cinematic quality of it, esp. the music, is engrossing. Killing the witch is a fun challenge, versus is great (mostly if you're playing with friends), and it's enjoyable chaos when the horde meets up with a molotov or 2. That said, it is a bit of a one trick pony, but I'm still enjoying it after many times playing through.
